    Hi,

I'm a newbie at planted tank. So, here are a few simple questions:

    - I bought a JBL GH test set, would this measure KH as well? Tried it on the tank water (after 2 teaspoon of KH up from Nature) and still can't figure how the color is supposed to turn from red to green according to instruction; it was never red in the 1st place after putting in the drops.

    - Should I go get the KH test set instead? Then is GH of any use for planted tanks?

    - Those $1.50 plants at LFS may not have roots, so do I plant the whole tub into the sand and remove the plastic tub/floss when it starts rooting?

    - Where can I get more 'mature' plants with roots and hopefully in better shape than those in LFS?

    Anthony

    I have:
    - a 30" x 15" x 18" (LxWxH) tank. ie close to 30G.
    - 1" JBL fertiliser (the large pack) and about 3" of 2-3m gravel
    - 2235 Eheim ECCO
    - 2 units of 2x36W AEC lightings from Nature
    - JBJ Reg+Solenoid CO2 set from Nature

    - and just bought $20 worth of plants (I guess rootless) from Mainland in Pasir Ris fish farm.
    Planted Tank:
    30x15x18in / 115 L (30USG)
    JBL Fert, 72W PL, CO2
    Cardinals x 7, Harlequin Rasboras x 2, SAE x 1, Golden algea eater x 1, Rummynose x 3

GH and KH are two separate things
the only case i can think of when the 2 are related is when you use coral chips in your tank
KH up will not affect ur GH
in practical terms, i have never used a GH test kit

KH test kits are . . . needed if you're worried about your pH fluctuations
however, imo, my kH is zero, pH is 6.5 at nite, 5.5 in the day
fish showed no signs of distress and were breeding
take note tho, all were soft, acid water fish

    remove the stuff b4 planting
the roots will grow on their own
as for getting more mature plants, this place is a good source
when people have excess plants they'll be more than happy to share them with other fellow aquarists

    your setup sounds good
i'd go with more fert if i were you, though

KH measures concentration of HCO3-/CO3--. KH is related to pH and CO2.

GH measures Mg++ and Ca++. Mg and Ca are both important macro nutrients for the plants.

    eh DEA,

    >however, imo, my kH is zero, pH is 6.5 at nite, 5.5 in the day

you mean 5.5 when light on and 6.5 when off, correct?
