    Well, other than for decoration purposes, I read that it can alter your water conditions. Any dudes here have sort of like a guide to identify types of rocks and their effects on water?

    You may be referring to coral chips.

    Coral chips come from coral stone. It will alter water condition or act as a pH buffer. These are lime stone or something like, which will buffer (or up) your PH. Some crush it and add into or become part of filter media.

    go nutty like me and bring along a bottle of ph down to lfs rock hunting or when you go rock collecting...
    test it with a few drops to see if it bubbles[ask permission first!] those that bubble[some fizz!] have some limestone or are calcareous and will make your water alkaline+hard in the long run...
