Adding of ice or cold water?

Hello reader...

I want to ask, is it all right to add cold water into my tank, a portion by a portion in a few time interval? Will it affect the faunas and floras?
Previously, i added one piece of ice at 15minutes interval until my temp. is desired. Then, i found out that these ices, sometimes produces oil.
(Maybe my hands are not clean when i'm doing the refilling of water)

So, can you please advise me on which is the better way; ice cubes or cold water --> which is stored inside my fridge?

izzit neccessary to add ice???
once u hit the desirable temperature, it'll still rise to room temperature (according to thermal equilibrium)..lol

frequent change of temperature will affect ur fishes, increase the risk of ich outbreak if nv handle well

why add ice? it'll just bring down the temperature temporarily. moreover it's quite troublesome if you do it in intervals. very stressful la.....

just add a fan and on it 24/7. me using fan as well and so far so good.

Unless you hire a maid to do this job day after day... it's a very impractical way of lowering the temperature.

Fans do a much better job, and you even save on electricity.

flunctuating temperature - first mistake. This will make your fish ill. When fish is ill in planted tank, it is VERY TROUBLESOME.

put it in a fridge. Once it turns into solid ICE,
put 1 bottle in your tank. when it turns liquid,
remove it and put bottle no.2. don't waste your time
putting ice cubes cause it'll melt fast.

BUT still using fan will DEFINATELY help you ...

don't you think it's going to be ugly with the coke bottle in your tank? your fish feed on "coke" ha.......... just joking.

IMO, fan is still the best alternative unless you want to invest on a chiller.

Cheap Chill

scotworm, Amidala & I have been using the cheap chill mtd + 24/7 fan to keep our tank's temp between 25 - 27C. From observation, it's better to float bottled ice than float ice per se. This will avoid a sudden temperature fluctuation and prevent contaminants from leaching into the tank's water.

However if you have read through our article Cheap Chill as directed by ace, we do recommend that you do so for a larger tank (more than 2ft). Anything smaller, we would advise you to use smaller bottles and keep a closer eye on the temperature when you do so.

As water is a bad conductor of heat, Cheap Chill usually doesn't cause sudden temperature fluctuations in larger tanks, in fact, I observe that temperature will drop by 1 - 2C over a span of 2 hours (with one change of bottled ice) and will maintain at that temperature for another 1 or 2 hours. Don't think the fishes will be too unduly stressed because in nature, natural phenomenon such as rain do affect both temperature and pH anyway.
