    Hi to all,

Just caught the "apisto" bug from Mr YS here. Was wondering why not we start a picture thread of these beautiful fishes. I will start the ball rolling

    Apistogramma viejita from Wilhelm.

Sorry for the badly taken pictures of the apisto

    This is the King

    This is the Queen

    Talking

Wacky, I think you mis-spelt viejita as viegita for the Queen picture.

Hopefully not vegeta instead. Haha, but for the quality of the specimens. They were well worth every penny you paid to get them here.

No space for apistos now but I suppose I could make way for at least one species..

Hmm... the king draws my interest.
I guess its a very aggressive species, like betta, right...? So we can't add them with tetras...?
Their beautiful colour is very "eyecatching" between the lush green plants.

They can be kept with tetras, and no they're not as aggrasive as betta. The colouration will grow intense when mating or a rival opponent arises. Most apisto or should i say all apisto comes from low pH rivers. They do tolerate pH up tp 8.0 but they tend to breed better, grow better, look better and feel at home given the lower pH.

It's not difficult to keep apisto, once the apisto stablise in your tank, it's hell to even remove it. Give them lots of cover, considering them shy fishes but turns slightly more open during feeding period.

Give apisto a try, it's worth it thou i've kept none at the moment for quite a while.
    Cheers!

Nick, Very Nice and intense colouration..
I've heard that the quality is so good that the redness will remain even in the F1 offsprings!

Sweet Angel, you will find lots of satisfaction in keeping Apistogrammas.
They are perfect for planted tanks and as the main show fish..
As a matter of fact, they show best in a planted tank!
And in their biotope, they live well with tetras too!

However, not all are as red and beautiful as Wackytpt's.
It's NOT "Chee lick", NOT "Chee Chee Licks"!!! Cichlids is pronounced as "Sick Lids"!!!!!

Moreover there are now ard 200++ species of apistos. There is bound to have one to your liking. Prior to that, Fries of each individual also dun turn out the same in term of colorations.

    News from PFK

If you are interested in new Apistos... Extracted from UK Fish mag, Practical Fish Keeping. Happy reading... :

    New Apistogramma is smallest known

Two new species of dwarf cichlid from the Apistogramma genus have been described, one of which is the smallest known to science.

The first of the new cichlid species, Apistogramma salpinction, comes from the relatively typical apisto habitat of still or lentic waters, but the other one Apistogramma angayuara, is rather more unusual.

Not only is Apistogramma angayuara the smallest Apistogramma species known, with the largest male measuring just 24.7 mm and the largest female a mere 22.7 mm, it is also found in rapid flowing water and feeds predominantly upon rhizopods.

This trophic niche is so unusual that the species is believed to be the first cichlid discovered with a significant proportion of rhizopods in its stomach contents.

The new cichlids, have just been described by Sven Kullander of the Swedish Museum of Natural History and Effrem Ferreira of INPA in Manaus in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology.

The rheophilic Apistogramma angayuara was found among rapids near the cachoeira Vira Mundo on the Rio Trombetas system and is thought to be a member of the pertensis species group.

The fish has three prominent stripes made up by dark spots along the sides of the abdomen, a caudal spot and a low dorsal fin in adult males.

The other fish, Apistogramma salpinction, was found in a swamp believed to be connected to a stream known as Igarape Caxipacore about 40 miles from Cachoeira Porteira.

It's a showy fish, with some similarities with the Apistogramma cacatuoides group.

Kullander and Ferreira say that salpinction has caudal fin streamers, like those of cacatuoides in adult males, and prolonged anterior dorsal fin lappets.

    A. salpinction also has a distinctive colour pattern that sets it apart from related apistos: "The colour pattern includes a lateral band and abdominal stripes that become darker and have much lighter interspaces on the caudal peduncle, and a caudal spot that is divided into elongated blotches continuing the lateral band and upper two abdominal stripes respectively."

For more details on the new species see the paper: Kullander, SO and Ferreira, E. (2005) - Two new species of Apistogramma Regan (Teleostei: Cichlidae) from the rio Trombetas, Pará State, Brazil. Neotropical Ichthyology, 3(3):361-371, 2005.
