you're right it is a "shrimp". some people think shrimps must be small, that's just common word usage, not respected by Nature![]()

You'll still be able to find it in the wild here. Try places that were once brackish rivers and are now freshwater bodies of water

But don't the larvae need seawater to grow?

Ok ok... *Salute* to the expert...Originally Posted by XnSdVd

I'm crypt collecting... Starting cheap, now have Cryptocoryne beckettii, C.beckettii var petchii, C.crispatula var.balansae, C.griffithii(Melted!), C.nurii, C.parva, C.pygmaea(Melted!
), C.tonkinensis(Melted!
), C.walkeri, C.wendtii 'Brown', C.wendtii 'Green', C.wendtii 'Green Gecko', C.wendtii 'Tropica' and Cryptocoryne x willisii
Oh, juggling is hard work, man!...

If I'm not wrong the difference is neither size or geography related. Simply put with the PRAWN, the second flap/segment/plate(starting from the head) overlaps the first and third.
Whereas in SHRIMP the head overlaps the first overlaps the second overlaps the third and so on. So go look at your yamatos. They're shrimp.
And for lunch tomorrow order prawn noodles, you'll probably see the difference.
Also, the aussie uni says:

Can the forum gurus please confirm? I'm just the rodent...

Oh yes, some experts please confirm... This is intertesting... I was just staring at my shrimp tank's inhabitants... Can't see the plates! Haha... Would probably need a magnifying glass or a dead one to verify! Haha... But I would not want dead shrimps...![]()

what I meant was that the way we use shrimp vs prawn has got nothing to do with taxonomy and classification. but as xnsdvd has pointed out there IS a taxonomic definition to the two terms, just that we layman does not use it appropriately.

interesting knowledge!![]()
so the big fellows in C328 are shrimps or prawns??![]()

No, brackish water is enough. In the Malaysian wilds, I'd find them by tasting the water as I motor the Scanoe upstream. The point just 500m before where the water is sweet is where I'd find the most.Originally Posted by XnSdVd
BTW our reservoirs that are converted from tidal rivers are still mildly brackish as seawater still gets back in.

Ack! don't you ever get sick? or are we singaporeans just overly wussy? Erm... the ones at C328 are probably shrimp. Do they have darl blue gray stripes, a curved "horn" and very long thin pincers? If so, they're shrimp. The biggest shrimp at that.

Shrimps, prawns, doesn't matter actually. Once its fried and goes gulp down the throat, it becomes poop.Originally Posted by mdm
