    Re: aquarium chiller for 100$

    Baruch,
Some of us are working on a peltier-based unit that's similar to what you've shown, not for reef or planted setups but to maintain cool-water killies.

One of our forumers managed to bring the water down to 10ºC and can be maintained stable temperature at 20ºC via a thermo-controller.

I'm not sure whether he's going to scrap the prototype but I sure would like to get my hands on it. BTW, the unit is only suitable for smallish tanks, perhaps up to 10gal.
I'm back & keeping 'em fingers wet,

I am looking at one that cost $37 dollars. Base on Peltier setup also anyone game enough to be the first few to try out? I am contacting the manufacturer.
Anyone good in electronic can help work on the controler? I got the circuit diagram.

keehoe, that project of yours will be a revolution. I'll be game to try it out, although not on a killie tank

I understand the radiator and the cooling fan, but what is the thick white probe made of?

Kee Hoe, let me have a look at the circuit diagram. I'll see if I understand it.

Terence, that white probe is the cooling point. This IceWorks IceProbe thingy also has 2 other variations which also include the use of a temperature controller. For small tanks it would be a good inclusion however you'll need more than 1 IceProbe for larger tanks beyond 3 ft I think.

Guys, i am a real lazy person. So i search real hard in the internet and found..... This: http://oatleyelectronics.com/images/pelt2.jpg
So no need to buy kit and spend too much time doing the housing etc.
One thing we would like to make sure is NO copper.

We just have to buy some tube and join it in. Maybe add another unit of peltier module and higher amp fan for better cooling power. Maybe insulating our fish tank would help also.

    Yangyang, the controller is at:
http://oatleyelectronics.com/kits/k140a.html. We would only need it if the unit is very effective. Else i am not particular whether having my fish tank at 27C or 23C both is acceptable to me.

Most likely we will need the circuit for powersupply also.

They also carry peltier module at a reasonable price.

Yes I understand that there's a company in SG that supplies these TECs to the industry market and its somewhere near your office.

That PELT2 model looks good but whether its efficient or not is another issue.

The temp. controller can easily be bought from SLS or SLT. I found a shop dealing in DIY electronic parts at SLS and they had this temp. controller unit.

Just a short update. The unit is in. I am going to get some tubing and aligator clip to wire them up (220V, scary). If we are gathering at Ron place saturday, i would rather do the testig there. Just in case.... i need someone to call ambulance. Joking. But more brain would definately help in fine tuning the unit. Anyone good in fine scale soldering? The IC chip can't tolerate much of my clumsy soldiering skill.

One thing puzzle me is that the unit have 3 water inlet/ outlet. I suppose one of them is for the air to escape as the water fill in. Any idea?

PohSan, if you want. I can lend you a pelthier to try out. One word of warning is you need a big heat sink for it to work effectively. I was using my cubical frame last time in the office as the heat sink. Heat sink so big that no one notice any temperature difference while i enjoying my icy cold ice lemon tea.

*A word of experience: If you drinking coke, make sure you got the right side up of the Pelthier. Else you will have a cooked coke and it taste awful.

Did you order the pelt2 from oatleyelectronics?

    How's the performance so far?

So far able to achieve 24.5C in the morning. I think can push a lot further if being use in highly ventilated location. Something is wrong with the wiring and the plastic on my aligator clip melted.

I guess for it to be worthwhile, i must do without the big powerhead.
(I am able to get ~25.5 C with a fan alone)

Just curious to see if there are further developments from this old thread. Did you have to drill a hole through the tank to fit the peltier?
    Warm regards,

    Hi Lawrence,
in my forum we also had a discussion about peltiers and if you can use them for smaller tanks. Some started to build mini chillers themselves and it works. The build small external or hang on the top mini chillers. You can read it in detail here: http://www.shrimpnow.com/forums/show...6&page=1&pp=10

    best regards
