    pH/kH calculations assume that the only buffer system in the water is the carbonate/hydrogen carbonate one
    in practice that never works out, so don't bother

    excel is actually a sugar which is accesible by plants but not so much by algae
    what could be happening is that bacteria are working on the sugars and burning up oxygen in the process
    that's quite plausible for a 1ft cube imo, but 4ft tank, how much did you add?

    6'x2'x2' tank . 50% water change dosed 180ml of Excel. Few fishes died few hours later. Next day, 60ml Excel, 3 cardinals and Rummy noses died.
