prefilter?

is it neccessary to have 2 filters( 1 acting as a prefilter) for a planted tank? i'm thinking of setting up a 6 ft planted tank.
1) wat is the purpose of a prefilter?
2) do we on both filters at the same time?
3) wat filter medium to use?
4) Any recommendations on the filters ?

1) its only necessary if u somehow cannot achieve full circulation in the 6ft.. (blockage by plants)

3) mostly the same (ceramic, floss)
4) ehiem 2028

as may wanna consider using jus one 2028 together with a powerhead

2229 is good it had been discussed extensively here already.

the only drawback is price
and also the wet-dry function gets affected rather easily by stubborn "indigestable" debris such as plant bits.

I mean if you say good, surely you can tell in what way is it good. For me I'm not looking to get a filter. Juz got myself a E2028 resently. So far it's performance does not seem any much different than my previous Fluval 303. The only reason that I chose this brand is due that the fact that many rated it very highly on it's reliability and the reason for choosing this model is cos of the priming system which is very handy. Also there is a valve system which I like very much; it stops water flow in the hoses when I unplug the filter for cleaning.

My quiery is that, how is E2229 better than my E2028 apart from the wet/dry issue that I have to pay some extra $$$. From what I heard for planted tank we wet/dry function is quite useless (correct me if I'm wrong). I think the capacity wise, it's almost the same.

Hmmm.. i've seen some planted tanks using prefilter together with a main filter. The prefilter does not have a motor and it uses a different filter medium. Wonder if it is necessary to on both filter? anyway, is it necessary to get two filter with the same capacity? [:]
btw, any recommendation for surface skimmer?

if you will allow me to explain ,

-yes 2229 has a greater bio capacity compared to 2228/2028. I will not use a 1 for 1 comparison. If i am using a 2229 for a tank, i will use a 2028 plus another filter to match it if there is a need to change.

-it is deemed "useless" for planted aquaria largely due to the very high oxygenation level of the filtered water. Ironically very powerful filtration are deemed useless in planted cases.

- the price difference is in the wet-dry functioning.
FUndamentally, the 2229 is already drastically different from conventional canisters 2028 included. It is not an add on function. It is an entirely different filter. Thus there is nothing "new" besides the wet-dry function. coz the wet dry function is everything and nothing else is needed to make a greater difference

- to answer why 2229 is a special filter, have to recommend u read a thread started by bene in equipment


and for myself i choose eheim largely for reliability. features come second. and my favourite series is the Classic series
