    hi, i'm not a apisto-keeper but this's how i see them.

i'd never ever given apistos a second look cos back then, i used to stay away from all cichlids for their "agressive" nature.

then someone got me to check up on the apistos available at a lfs near my place. that's when i realized that despite having read so many books & magazines, spending hours on the internet checking up on fishes, i knew "nuts" about apistos and then i panicked a little.[]

at the lfs one evening, i'd to look closer in order to "report back to base camp", AND that's when i noticed their uniqueness! apistos have a type of beauty in their own ways. i'd noticed the "cockatoo" before cos i'd always thought cockatoos can only be found in birdshops![] then i noticed the "t-bar" that evening. in my opinion, they're unique and colourful.

so am i keeping apistos now? no lah, still not into cichlids yet. maybe some day...

    Hi guys,
Sorry if I offend anyone out there but I need to ask. What is so special about this Apisto fish? Is it a new fish? Why does it cost so much..... compare to killi, discus and ram, they are not as beautiful and they don't swim together. Please enlighten me 'cause I'm thinking of getting a few if they are really that great. With $10 a pc, I would consider killi. Saw them in Gan but they look like normal fish to me. How many types are there and what's the 'kick' it has?

    Thanks in advance.... I'm curious.

Dennis: One man's Apisto may be another man's LuoHan. I used to think like this but now getting to appreciate it a little better. Currently this is what I like about them:
    - watching them swim "tactically", or darting/hovering in mid-water like a dragonfly.
    - they do not occupy as much space as Discus and can live in community tank
    - they are the few cichlids that do not disturb substrate and plants (seems like most of the guys keeping apistos put them in their planted tank).
    - not demanding; and have a pecking order when I keep several species together -- interesting to watch.

From literature on the net, other behaviour that sounded interesting to me but yet to see:
    - display of parental instincts
    - display of intense colours during breeding
    - they do not inter-breed between species

Lastly, new species are still being discovered. That should add some excitement.

Even though i just got my apisto, i thoroghly enjoy watching him. it's different from those small tetras who dart here and there. i enjoy watching his purposful hovering movements, appears to be scouting for a spot to claim as his own. i guess it would be even more interesting when i have found a female for him and perhaps other species as well and watch how they establish the pecking order.

    Hi all,
Thank you for filling me in with lots of information and pictures. Guess what, I'm going to get myself at least 2 but I would love to get cacatuoides and borelli for my planted tank. You guys are right, discus can be big but the reason why I kept dicus is because their full colour changes as they grow bigger but they need more time to take care which I can't affort now. Can anyone tell me where to get those two types and how much?

Thanks guys, esp. to simon for posting those beautiful pic.

    Address, hmm....

No.16 Lim Chu kang lane 9A. Enter from lane 8 which is the last entrace or from lane 6 also can.

Once u reach 9A follow the sign which states Jalan Gang follow it then once u reach that entrance go all the way strg in. it's a dead end. They do entertain walk in but their stocks of apisto such as borelli, pan, nij are out currently. A.aga are still available, they have the bigger variety of Badis badis quite nice.
    Cheers!

Went to Toh on Sat. and guess what, I bought 6 Apisto. 2 males and 4 females. I suppose there were 2 pairs and 4 'available' ones but I totally forgotten what they are. Besides, I bought 6 ram too. There are kind of expensive for a small fish around 1"-2" but I think they should be worth it since you guys out there said so. I've also being surfing the net on this fish. I am confused ..... so many types available but none of mine looks like those shown on the net. Anyway, I've decided to give it a go and get as many type as I could in Singapore.

    Thanks!

P.S. If any of you have some for sales, email me at [email protected]

Yes, I remembered I've bought a pair of Agazzi but not sure about the rest. Today, I went to Gan's and got myself 3 more which I believe the red tails type. I think I have 2 males and 1 female. They are doing well in my community tanks. While I was in Gan's, I believe there were at least 3 types of apisto although I can't really tell what they are. Based on my 'experience', there are 'good stuff' in the tank. He's putting those Apisto into a smaller tank for easy viewing and catching..... I had a hard time chasing after those 3 I bought. I also notice that some fishes died from injury... believe the LH got them. Maybe the fishes are really cheap that Gan can affort to 'feed' them to LH.... but then, he has to sell those along market price to keep the shop going. Let's hope Gan could bring in more valuable fishes at affortable price. As long as he's running a profitable business and yet able to meet our requirements, we should really hope his shop is always around when we want to get reasonable priced and good fishes.

ok, i'm in, but anyone got their apistos to clear? Haha... not bad, those pics look good, I was thinking of getting holland rams really, see how, prices and toughness gonna be a big deciding factor.

Like Juggler said, it's their dragonfly style of swimming that I like, so bring em' in.

Some of them look really nice by the way
