thata a nice effect. the wood will lok fab when the moss grows in.
im always afraid of keeping ferns though cos they will turn black somewhat.
great job
Hi forumers,
As I am going to NS this December, I had to convert my 2ft high maintenance tank into low maintenace tank cuz I really dun want to give up this hobby. I went to Teo's aquatic farm today and bought some java ferns, crypts, java moss attached to wood, nanas and e tennellus. Spent $58 just on plant. Of cuz, in the end i have surplus of plant.(kia su)
I was abit shocked to see that water cockroaches and centipedes started to crawled out after i putting the java moss DW into the tank. Manage to kill some of them, but still got some cockroaches in it.
Below are the pic, I will change the wallpaper to become black colour on thurs. Will update u guys again. Comments are most welcome. Thanks for viewing.
Before (High maintenance tank)
After (low maintenance tank)

This is my first time keeping fern. Do anyone knows what causes the fern to turn black?Originally Posted by gregorsamsa
Remove the Anubias, so that your driftwood can lead towards the back, creating depth. Add more of the Windelov fern to the clump already at the back right, and double the normal Java fern clump too!
Mine didn't turn black for some reason. Temperature and water flow are things to think about imho.
Just some suggestions![]()
Terrence, can elaborate more on DW lead towards the back? Do u mean shifting it further back? :P Looks like i have to go down to Teo's Aquatic farm again on saturday. I hate to walk from the bus stop to the farm, its quite a distance. Anyway thanks for ur suggestions!Originally Posted by |squee|
The temperature shouldn't be too high, what about the water flow? Strong or gentle?![]()
Because the Anubias are so big leaved, it ruins the effect of the wood leading towards the back and "disappearing into the distance". I don't know if you get what I mean here. Don't move the wood, just remove the Anubias and see if you like it better. It may look worseSo it's just a suggestion!
My water flow has always been gentle.
I think I understand what Terence meant about the anubias looking out place now, maybe moving them to the corner with the java ferns may/may not work... do consider the leaves size for small tanks, somehow I felt the wood is bit big for the layout, perhaps with more plants and time, it will look better. One point to add is the tank lacks height(tall plants at the back)
Yes Terrence I think i got what you mean! Its juz like putting a huge leaf plant in front of a small leaf plant, making the picture look weird, right? How about shifting it some where further behind at the corner right which Fei Miao had mentioned?Originally Posted by |squee|
Haha! Sianz diaoz! it cost me $35 for that wood. Actually cost $40, but the uncle from the Teo's aquatic give me a discount.Originally Posted by Fei Miao
Can i ask you guys, will balansae grow tall? I dare not use tall plants cuz i worried that i have no time to trim! I choosen balansae cuz when it grow tall, it will actually add some height into the scape, plus it leaves are narrow, so it won't block too much light. But what i worried now is that, will it grow tall?Originally Posted by Fei Miao
Here's the day 3 update!
I have double up the fern on my left and shifted Anubias to the corner right. Added in some blyxa japonica in front of the DW. And also, i've upgrade my HOT filter to canister filter. Well, Is it getting better?

looks good, kinda 'clean' look.![]()
Something about the water & the fishes that calms me down.
Looks much better imho! Now just wait for things to grow in... I'm particularly interested in the crypt you have behind... balanse? I'm interested in how it'll turn out.![]()
nice
now just wait for everything to grow in nicely![]()
Michael & Avant : Thanks! Seems like i can go NS without worry liao!
Terrence : Haha, all the thanks ya! Your suggestion works!
haa...you can still book out when you are in NS haa..
Nice setup.![]()
Avant : Haha, ya! But at least i dun have to scratch my head thinking how to improve it in the camp, if not trainning so hard already still have to headaches, later short life arH! haha!
Diki: Hey thanks for ur comment! I will update you guys when this tank got matured!
Nice scape... IMO, I'd rather use hairgrass than tenellus... I think they will match better with your other plants.
A thing about the water cockroaches... They are the water bugs right? Still around? Better try to remove them... Won't want them to attack your smaller fish...
Anyway, after your training, you will NOT be able to think of your tank... Haha... All you want to do is eat and rest!![]()
Read me! http://justikanz.blogspot.com/
I'm crypt collecting... Starting cheap, now have Cryptocoryne beckettii, C.beckettii var petchii, C.crispatula var.balansae, C.griffithii(Melted!), C.nurii, C.parva, C.pygmaea(Melted!
), C.tonkinensis(Melted!
), C.walkeri, C.wendtii 'Brown', C.wendtii 'Green', C.wendtii 'Green Gecko', C.wendtii 'Tropica' and Cryptocoryne x willisii
Oh, juggling is hard work, man!...
Thanks Jus! Actually, I can mix tennellus with hairgrass together. Amano likes to do that! This create a nice and messy effect!
During the first day, some of the water bugs came out, i managed to get hold of some of them. But now i didnt see them, dont know whether they are hiding in the DW or die already. Haha!
Eat and rest, Of Cuz man!! haha! this is why i changed to a low maintenance tank. i am a lazy hobbyist ma!
haa..scratch head ah.. wear helmet too long must wash hair regularly hor...
aiyah... i think you'll be too exhausted to worry about the tank haa.. after your BMT, the tank should be just nice haa..
