    Hi guys,

I know there are a few variants of this fish. Anyone has any clue as to which one this is? I know it's not flaring, but I only manage to get a grab shot from it's holding tank.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Maybe Tefe? I saw some similar looking ones at Biotope just about 2 days ago.

If not Tefe, maybe another population. Coroai? Mamuri?

Whatever it is that's one nice bitaeniata.

Benny, I am surprised at the quality of this Wild F1 fish.
It looks like a fattened up Bitaeniata 'Tefe Bauna'...

Looks like our local apistos hobbyists breeders are getting good!
It's NOT "Chee lick", NOT "Chee Chee Licks"!!! Cichlids is pronounced as "Sick Lids"!!!!!

Its not yet fully fattened up. The belly region seems a little gaunt. A few good feedings on rich foods like worms should do wonders for his body size.

Actually, I was told it was too fat and I'm putting them on a diet. Feeding sparingly and hope to see them looking trim again. Does that work?

    Here's one more..

Somehow the body looks too compact for Bitaeniata.. I wonder if this is due to overfeeding during fry development stage..
And at this stage, ie young adult, I wonder if cutting down feeding will help in elongating the fish again..

By the way, Benny, your Apisto photography is improving with every shot!
I like the 3rd picture best..

I'll see the situation for a week more or so. If it does not seem to slim down, then I'll stop and resume normal feeding. Don't want to end up killing the fish.

Thank you for your encouragement. I'll still pretty clueless when it comes to these fishes and need to learn a lot more.

The caudal fin will grow bigger and elogated thus matching the fish when it's older.

When everything goes well by the time this fish mature, it'll look stunning..

Fat? I think thats just good to pump it up.
    Cheers!

Yorky, my previous pair of wild-caught bitaeniata were rather stocky too. I'd say that body form is a variable for the different bitaeniata populations.

I agree with Bene, pump it up is better than to have a skinny fella.

Benny, where'd you get this fella anyway? The blue pelvic fins is damn nice.

Yes somehow i'm scare of skinny apisto looks like they're too fragile.

Once you know your apisto ain't eating and looks sunken in the belly...you cannot reverse it mostly..

Just sharing a picture of my Apistogramma bitaeniata. Not sure if they are the same as the one that Benny has.

how can an F1 be wild.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

    Dbcyeo,
Well for a start, similar yellow throat.
And what I like is they pose the same way as with Benny's first pic.

Aiya, I wanted to be a little specific about it.
Everybody categorises their spawn as F1..
Just wanted to distinguish a wild specimen's F1 as opposed to an aquarium strain F1.. if you know what I mean..
    which should be a F2 or F3 or F4...

    Outspoken,

This pair is the last of my remaining spawn from last year. Bought a couple of wild pairs of "Tefe" variant and another type of A. bitaeniata then. Had a few spawns, but this came out different from either of its parents.
