Sorry, but first post on here. Got the link from a member from another forum with a link to what looks like a Fissidens (Tony's was a fontanus). This was the thread that was sent to me.

Just seeing if anyone can ID it with these pics.

    TIA!

    Eric,

It would help if you tell us where you got your moss.

Your moss looks like a Fissidens but I don't know if it's the same F. fontanus that Tony grows in his tank. I saw in 2 fish shops last week, a certain species of Fissidens for sale which looks very much like the F. fontanus.

Ever since the surge in interest, one cannot be sure anymore. In the old days, we were limited to just a couple of mosses but now there are many. They appear at such an alarming rate we really don't know where they come from. Without knowing the source, it's always hard to tell.

Before we met the professor, there wasn't a single species of Taxiphyllum in the aquaria scene. Now, we know there are at least 3, possibly more. Will there be more to come? You can bet on it

    Thanks for the reply, Loh.

As to where it's from, I got it from a friend who lives in Berkeley, California, USA. It was hitchhiking on a piece of driftwood that he received from someone who's in Connecticut (east coast USA).

My friend just tossed the piece of wood in there after he received it and this just popped up one day. Since then it has gotten larger and he gave me a portion of it (the size of moss in the second picture is about the size of my thumb).

Not sure if that was helpful at all...

    Eric,

The way the moss got into your friend's tank is almost similar to what Tony reported when he first showed us the moss. It could very well be a Fissidens fontanus but there must be many species of Fissidens in the ponds and streams of the United States. We can never be sure until it's examined closely under a microscope.

In any case, considering the high prices fish shops are asking for some of their Fissidens, let your friend know he can make a bundle by offering the plant on aquabid or ebay. All so often, Singaporean hobbyists ask for the earth when they sell plants to their counterparts in the USA. Perhaps, it's time for the US hobbyists to take revenge

    Hey Eric,

The second picture you posted are those string algaes covering most of the right sides of the "Fissidens"? Just curious...and I hope you have success growing that moss.

    Thanks, Randall.

Yup, that's string algae which was due to the last tank that it was in. It's since gone away and been replaced by another type of algae.

Contemplating moving it to my 90 gallon high light tank to kickstart the growth on it at the moment. I'll see how it does in one more week before I move it.
