I just made a 2 feet planted tank for a children's home. The plants are doing great and are growing well without CO2 as they are nana, becopa and difformis. The problem here is that the kids are throwing in fishfood pellets meant for kois and bits of bread. The bread doesn't seem to be an issue, but the koi food seems to take forever to disintegrate and white mucus alage has started to form over the food. Any reccommendation of what kind of fish, prawns, etc to keep in the tank as cleaners? I have a small bag of ceramic pellets for bacteria growth in the tank and I will be applying some bacteria growth solution into the tank soon. There are also 4 gouramis left from the previous tank.

Also, I will not be maintaining the tank, some of the older kids will help me with it.

    Best to

    1) Change the food to a sinking type food. Then you can use Yamato or Malayan shrimps as cleanup crew. Or Corydoras catfish.

    2) Use manual removal for the floating uneaten food by the end of the day. The older kids can be given that responsibility. Good for the kids too...

Give 'em a smack in the head and tell them not to throw those in.

No, just joking!! Get the older kids to take it out.

For a start, you should restrict access to the food, especially the wrong type of food. Otherwise, algae will be a more serious problem than the children in the near future.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

I think changing the food might be a better solution than placing a netted cover the tank. Try those micro pellets type of food.

As for fish wise, you can try molly, platy and SAE. Normally they dash for the food whenever I feed them. They are also good at clearing some algaes when there are no fish food available. If you switch to sinking type of food, yamato and corydoras are also very helpful.

But I think you might need to educate the kids or dedicate a few older kids to do the feeding. Excessive over-feeding could cause other issues too.
