hi,

how do i get rid of thread algae?? is there another way other than getting rid of it manually?? thnx

You can try the usual motley crew of algae-consuming fish to "help", but the best way is to remove as much of it manually as you can (work hard for those few days) while correcting your tank conditions.

Check for possible ammonia sources, check to see if your plants are showing healthy growth.

plants are healthy but wont know bout the ammonia....(dont have a test kit) maybe thats the reason why my shrimps are dying.....

Yamatoes in mass will help clear it but getting rid of it manually will help more (clear things faster). That said, you don't need algae eating critters to begin with to clear algae issues. Correct the issues after that...dose enough nutrients and get the CO2 good.

you guys do know that we are talking bout that stringy algae like cobwebs thing right? yamatoes eat them? think there is enough nutrients but i nvr put liquid fert

If you acclimatise the shrimps properly, that should rule out its cause. The other problem with folks is that they reduce surface movement down to too little in order to keep the CO2 in (very bad idea especially if you have not learn how to grow plants optimally yet.). O2 is all about in the air and you only need to move the surface water to get the O2 in. You might lose some CO2 in the process due to the surface movement but you can always add more CO2 to make up for it.

Ammonia will never be an issue in a planted tank if you add enough plant mass to begin with. Pack the tank as if it is grown in. Not just a few tiny plants or a stock of fast growing plants.

the shrimps like have spasms and swin here and there and will eventually lose balance and die....saved a few by throwing them into my 5ft tank.

What colour is it? Any picture? Well, since you don't dose anything, you might have multiple issues going on there. Getting rid of the algae is easy through plain elbow grease but keeping the thing from coming back is another issue. Which do you want?
