Help: How to feed new born Apisto?

Hi, I have a 3 ft community planted tank with Rainbowfish, Gourami, Cardinal Tetra, a few apisto, etc.

The pair of Apisto Trifasciata recently spawn and now I have a few tens of 2 days old fry. I have since removed the forever-hungry Rainbowfish, and the tank is more "quiet" now. The fry are too small to be moved, and I don't have a spare tank for them. The female has been protecting them quite well, and the male also helps out.

There is also another pair of Apisto Agassizii spawning in the same tank, which I guess should see the fry in the next few days if no problem.

The rest of the tank mates are Cardinals, a few Pearl/Honey Gourami, Angel fish (only one), SAE, Oto, and a couple of small Apisto.

So far the agressiveness has not been too bad from both pairs of spawning apisto.

I bought liquidfry and squeezed a few drops of it into the tank, but have no idea whether the fry eat it.

The LFS suggested feeding Daphnia, since I don't have an air pump and find it too troublesome for BBS. I was told to put in more daphnia so the fry get a chance to eat.

Now I am not sure how to proceed. Any advice will be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Congratulations on the successful spawn!

I'm not to familiar with feeding fry in community tanks, but perhaps people like Benetay can offer their advice.

However, I do know that fishes will eat anything that can fit in their mouth. Hopefully the fry are well taken care of by the female.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

First and foremost congrats to you. Feeding liquid fry isn't a food for the fries, they aid in the help to culture more micro-organism so that the fries can munch on them.

It's a slow and painful process but it's easier to squeeze the bottle then to bubble the bottles and hatch brine shrimps.

I agree that hatching BBS is time consuming and boring over a long period of time but it's the best fry food you can actually hatch yourself.

For the number of apisto in your tank and the rest of the tank mates, i'll suggest removing as many other fishes as possible. IMO i think it's difficult to remove without disturbing the apisto. Some apisto are spooky, once they get frighten they'll eat up their brood.

    Update us on your tank!
    Cheers!

Thanks to all of you for your advice.

Saw a big pack of brine shrimp eggs costs $59 As I have no intention to go into apisto breeding (more like to see them in a comm tank), and have no idea whether the fry will survive, don't think will spend that money now. Read someone has tried without air pump or use normal salt also managed to raise BBS.

I am trying out Daphnia, which is cheaper and easier for a lazy person like me. I pour the Daphnia (with its liquid) into a fine net and put the Daphnia into a cup of tank water. Then use a mini-siphon (?) to drop them into the tank. Hope that is the right way.

Maybe that's the only way for now, hopefully the fries will feed on the micro-organisms for now and then eat daphnia or BBS when they grow a bit bigger......

Let's just pray for the best.....congrats anyway!!
