I've a problem: There are such an old and rotting strands inside almost each bigger bunch of my hairgrass. It looks like some sludge with brown color and you can pick it with tweezers like cyanobacterium.
It's strange and it spoils the view. I've some yamatoes and one o.affinis inside.

In spite of this problem, my hairgrass grows normally.

Does anyone have an idea how to keep hairgrass clean (especially in the bottom parts)?

Trimming regularly as well as ritual cleaning... some people have mentioned they use a comb to brush the hairgrass out.

I use a wide threaded comb to get rid of the bushes like algae and the brown colour sludge like you had mentioned. Of course, this is not a long term plan but it just happens. Make sure the hg are well rooted before you use this method.

Old rotting strands happen when the hg becomes too dense and competing for light. Also dirt and mulm may contantly accumilate at the bottom and we can't reach there during our weekly water change. Hence, regular maintenance is necessary for hg, like trimming down, pulling out and replanting to give them a new lease of life.

Interesting method. Its roots are about 5-7cm long, that should be enough. I'll try it. Thanks for advice.

Well, finally I tried to extract sludge with narrow pipe and it seems to work well but it takes a long time as hairgrass trimming
