Does anyone know if those rusty looking rocks we see in some scapes, have a high iron(Fe) content? It seems to make sense cos I remember that being taught in my chemistry class. Fe03 is rust and it occurs naturally in most red looking rocks... Gurus? info? am setting up a small 2ft scape for my dad.

You're right about red rocks an indication of iron content, as to how high are the contents of iron in those rusty scaping rocks, I do not know... but I guess you still have to dose irons, sorry can't be of much help anyone with more info on this?

I do know that those lava rocks are very popular with african cichlid tanks. Plenty of holes for the fishes to worm in and out of.

Would certainly make an interesting scape.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

I'm thinking lots of reds and browns in the hardscape to contrast with the greens of the plants. We'll see how it goes.

I have lava rocks in my tanks. Placed near plants that like their iron. Since adding the rocks, the plants don't need iron dosing at all.

Be careful with lava rocks! They are extremely abrasive and can cut your fish.

I think you are referring to the volcanic rock called "scoira", quite common in some parts of the world eg Auckland NZ where the stuff is everywhere

Go to your favorite shop that you pass by everyday and ask. They have it.
