Diatom filters are almost impossible to find in Singapore.

Unfortunately, most of the filters you see are running on 110V. As such, not many options on the market. Magnum 350 from Marineland used to have 220V version, but have been out of the market for a long time. Vortex also have a 220V version for their XL model, but it's not available in Singapore. Ordering from the US will drive up the cost substantially.

Incidentally, they also have hang on top diatom filters like Eheim liberty style. Very convenient and nice.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

thezone: which design? there are many brands of diatom filters.

I personally think the magnum is the easiest to use. (with the addition of the p29 valve from vortex)

I have no idea what is a FR, but you cannot use diatom powder in anything other than a micron size filter.

basically the diatom powder is used to clog up the exterior of the micron filter (in magnum = micron filter catridge, in vortex = a micron filter bag). thus allowing only water through.

note the diatom powder stuck on the filter catridge, its already covered with brown particles from the water.

Any idea wat is the micron size?

I was thinking of using either a Tap water filter with some cartridge or a Fluidized Reactor (FR) with a filter bag to run the powder.

a fluidized reactor will not do anything at all. all the diatom powder will flush into your tank and it will be impossible to get out (short of a diatom filter)
    --

you can try a water filter. but you need to make adjustments/

    a) you must have sufficient turbulence in the filter catridge chamber to disperse the diatom powder onto the surface of the EXTERIOR of the filter catridge.

    b) unlike a water filter, where water enters the interior of the catridge and makes it to the outside, the flow of a diatom filter is the opposite way.

    c) going by the specs; the vortex diatom filter has a pump that drives at 400 gph, the marineland magnum has two models at 250gph and 350gph.

so if you want to diy, you can try and experiment. incidentally, happy aquarium still has a set of the marineland magnum 350

I believe the filter catridge by itself filters down to 1 micron.

strange thing, marineland website is down. search google for the product instead.
