    Hi guys,

Another fish that I saw the other day together with the Apistogramma viejita. This is an unidentified species with the German name "breitbinden", meaning broadbanded. I used to think that it was called "badminton"!!

Apparently this fish can be found in Venezuela, Colombia as well as Rio Negro from Brazil too. When matured, the dorsal and caudal fins are spectacular and the Venezuelan specimens displays amazing fin coloration. From what I understand, it's not an easy fish to keep. Beginners beware.

Does anyone here have any experience with them that might benefit those of us who might be keen to try?

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

    Benny,
Ap. sp Breitbinden is an easy fish to keep but moderately difficult to spawn.
Actually, I've kept this fish in almost neutral water and they are happy.
However, to bring out the full dorsal finnage, best kept in slightly acidic and soft water.
To spawn, requires PH 5.5 or below and soft water .. well at least from my own experience.
I've kept an adult pair in a Five Plan 'M' size and they had 2 broods of fries.

Just a comment, this one does not have the Red-throat colouration which is highly sought after.
Well it looks like a young fish as its dorsal finnage is not developed at all.

looks beautiful, some of their finnage never get to grow till such length. Keep them in soft and acidic water for good finnage.
    Cheers!

benny, since it is an undescribed fish with an informal label "Breitbinden", you don't need "cf." as there is nothing to compare against.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

    Yes Sir! Thank you Sir!!

Anyway, it was written as Apistogramma sp. (cf.) "breitminden"

So I should drop the cf totally?

    Cheers,

yes yes please drop. as I said there is not logic in its application in reference to an undescribed species (cf. = "compare with").

on the other hand, I have been advised by practising taxonomists that cf. and aff. should be used without the "sp." for example A. cf. vijieta (rather than A. sp. cf. vijieta) to refer to a specimen very similar to A. vijieta but which you are not sure whether they are really different.

anyway where did you get the Apistogramma sp. (cf.) "breitminden" label from?

I find that the taxonomic terms can get confusing so Benny can just call his "badminton".

Anyway, I like this species and only saw it once at someone's home. Like Yorky says, easy to keep but not easy to spawn.
