Yes, of course!
Yes, of course!
Hmmm, I remember I did a total black out for 7 days.... with a air stone in the centre of the tank.... and running UV filter.....![]()
hello bro barmby why u black out yr tank and added antibiotic
by right u u put anticbiotic u dont need to black out

Yes, you are right.Originally Posted by rosha
I added antibiotic is because I don't want the BGA bacteria to come back. Its like human being after having fever for several days even with panadol medication. Then you decide to see a doctor. The doctor give you both. Panadol and Antibiotic combo to kill and prevent the bacteria from coming back. Of cos, you have to finish off the bacteria by finishing the course of medicine..

hi all,
my xp, if you use anti biotic you need to restart the filter to get the filter bacteria going. otherwise there will be no3 deficiency and the bga may come back...unless you guys are putting in the no3 etc...

You guys talk about killing the BGA with this blackout. I've finally been getting regular CO2 into my setup (not easy to do with DIY setup) and that's stopped the spread of BGA. Woulld blacking out get rid of the BGA that I ALREADY have (on plant leaves and on drift wood)? Or do I still have to scrub the driftwood regardless?
wont the blackout kill ur plants too?
The plants can take the 3 day blackout with minimal harm. The BGA will be harmed much more.
No medical expert but this much I know. Antibiotics are generally meant for animal life though I have heard that some supplements sold by lfs contain antibiotics. Improper use may render this drug useless to some bacteria(antibiotics resistance bacteria) which may not do justice to human kind. So, may I urge all to be cautious in using antibiotics especially when they are prescribed for human consumption.
gosh...rupert...you transform your tank to a coffin....
I'll be doing the same....soon.
Typically when you start the black out, untold visitors suddenly appear out of nowhere and you have to explain the “coffin” in the living room.Originally Posted by kt89

BGA, yes - they suffocate your plants
BBA, they should, but so far, never encounter them killing my plants yet becuase they appear in spots here and there...
Folks, don't confuse yourself. Do the blackout.

Did you do this? All must be followed. I have done black out 3 times! It still comes back because I missed one of the step below each time I do it.Originally Posted by tanyingzhou
1)50% water change on pre and post blackout (cover with thick blanket!!),
2)clean filter,
3)scrape below the gravel line if any algae is along the glass=gravel
line.
4)lightly vacuum the surface to remove any detritus on the surface of the gravel,
5)Clean prior and after

should the filter be cleaned before or after the blackout or both?
Clean filter before and after treatment.
