    Hi Ppl,
Just to check, any body using this product, got some recently. Was told it's ferts and gravel together, two in one that kind of thing. And it might affect the PH. Can anybody tell me how's the product? any information would be appreciated. Thanking in adance.

I have recently changed from lapis to onyx...
So far so good.. what I did was rinse the onyx for about 3 time, put it in my tank, put in my plants, cycle the water for about 2hours, put my fishes and shrimps in...
So far no casulties, including my cherry shrimps... now i am waiting for my crypts and HC to take roots...

I'm using it for my 20L nano tank. Basically it doesn't have much base ferts i would say. I even add root monster at the bottom before laying the onyx sand. It does have some mineral that raises the KH/GH/PH.

Initially when i use it (non co2 tank) the PH was very high like 8.5. After 2 weeks it will stabilise around 7.3-7.4. Prior to using this my PH was around 6-7 due to the log wood i got inside and i did not buffer the PH by raising the KH.

The water from my tap PH is 7.3-7.5 range.

Thanks for the input, guys. Here are my observations,
    1) Must definitely pre-wash before use, God!!!
    2) It's a little 'compact', like mineral sand.
    3) Onyx is not black colour hor! its grey.
Will update a month later on how the usage. Thanks.

    Hi Sirius,
Can I check with you, kindly elaborate on cycle water for 2 hours? Or does it mean just let the filter run for 2 hours? Thanks, curious.

I got out an old tee shirt and used that as a strainer when I washed this substrate. I only washed half of it and the unwashed half was used as the first layer with the washed half topping it off.
I've read on some other forums that it's best to lay a really thin layer of peat down before placing this substrate in. True?

If I recall correctly loupgarou was using Seachem's onyx sand too. Check for this tanks setups to see a picture of the plant growth. However, he is also using MH lights.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Oh.. I let the filter run so as to let the water settle down.. For me, it took about 2hours for the water to clear up.. I think I had the same experince as you... During the prewash, I thought i have bought cement...

when I bought it from NA, Mr Chan advised to prewash afew round before using it. Had a nice scrub of my hands when washing the two packet that I have bought. I think the key is to be careful when you pour water into the tank when your substrate is in place... The onyx have very fine particles which look like dust, but infact is the substrate itself in a very fine form...
any photo of your tank now? share share...
