    Hi all,

I just started using Seachem onyx sand. Is it necessary to wash them before use? I think I wash them till the water was clear. Now when I stir it, there is no chalkiness. Does that mean I washed away all its minerials????

    Please advice. Thanks.

Can I add (after wash) the onyx on top of the existing gravel inside a tank , or should it mix with gravel ? Right now I am using Lapis with JBL Aquaplus base fert.

    Cheers

You can add it on top of the existing gravel if you want. It's meant to be used alone.
I usually just wash half the gravel. The un-washed half is what I place below.

You can add them on top. However when u replant next time the lapis gravel will come out from the top and mix with the sand. If u're okay with this, go ahead

use it unmixed, you don't even need base fert per se. part of the reason to use onyx is for the color when you take photographs of the tank, you don't want to spoil that effect.

    Hi

I bought a bag recently. It was supposed to be a 7 kg bag, according to the shop owner. Well, I did not remember whether I read the labeling on the bag to see if it was indeed 7 kg Well, but it did feel like around there when I carry it for a couple of hundred meters

I bought quite a few other things, so did not really remember the exact price, somewhere $15 ~ < $20 range.

I did remember one thing, one the labelling, there is a recommendation of using 1 kg per 200 sq cm (or 31 sq in) to give a depth of 5 cm.

    Here is the Seachem link

    http://www.seachem.com/products/prod...yx%20Sand.html

Oh, yes, the water is very cloudy/grey chalkiness, it takes quite a bit of washing to get it clear. But it provides very nice background. I did a test shot of a cherry shrimp on the gravel. The resulting shot looked as if I photoshopped the image to change the image to a black and white image, leaving only the shrimp in its original colors. Cool

I bought at Kingfisher; I was told they were having a promotion and that the normal price was around what you mentioned.

Kingfisher promo - I am not sure if it is still on, I bought the Seachem onyx early last week.

Mix with Dennerle Deponit - sorry, I pass on that, previously, I used Lapis only, this is the first time I am using onyx; maybe some other bro like to take that question up.

    regards

The whole idea of getting seachem substrate is so that you don't need to buy the base fert. I'm currently using ONLY seachem flourite for my substrate for about 3mths now and the plants are flourishing!

If you want to mix than go for lapis with whatever base fert you want cos it's cheaper.
