you come to the right place my friend haha. the key is that merah has a ring around the flank spot, and this ring is contrasted against the base colour, maculatus is much more diffused.

How do we tell the difference between the 2 ?
Merah suppose to be more red but then Maculatus can also be very red depending on the water condition. If both are same size how we can differentiate between the two ?
To me they look very similar from photo and from seeing real fish in LFS. I think some LFS also anyhow label.

why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

Thanks Choy ! Just confirmed that mine is Merah... when i bought it i was told it was maculatus.
Even the britgatte tank is mixed with merah in that LFS ..
Btw super clear photos from you again.
Is merah able to breed in a planted tank? I think I've got a few babies of merah.
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.
Don't walk behind me as I might not lead, don't walk in front of me as I might not follow. Walk beside me, as my friend.
Mohamad Rohaizal is my name. If it's too hard, use BFG. I don't mind.

Rasboras Axelrodi blue or Maculatas from Seaview 100 for $10.
how do you tell if these cute little fellas are male of female?
BA just go with what you see, the males are usually more colourful in body and finnage, the females should be a heavier looking fish, look at the 2 pics of choys i'd say they were both males. hope this helps.
