Well. I think it should be returned. But I also think that the British are very, very interested in keeping them too. It's really very rare.
Cheers,
This is another news about the "orchid smuggling" by scientist of Malaysia.
The Sabah Wildlife Department and Sabah Parks will make a direct request to the British authorities for the return of six of the state’s rarest orchid species that were smuggled into Britain 18 months ago by a Malaysian scientist.
The Paphiopedilum or slipper genus, one of the rarest orchids, is found only in a remote part of Mount Kinabalu.

I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?
British already got those rare orchids before. They used to come to Sarawak & Sabah to collect rare slipper orchids. As some of them are the enforcement officers of CITES, they can bring back those orchids to UK without any problems!
But for those orchids....I am doubt they will return.

not bad idea to leave the with Kew Gardens, at least they will be well taken care of. if returned, they may die along the way due to mishandling, like those aros.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

as you know i'm a brit, i think they should have been returned a long time ago, mind kuching when kew collectors were in your country they must have had permission to collect and bring them to the UK.

Until now I haven't find slipper orchid. They are growing on the summit or steep slope of limestone hills. I don't want to risk my life for those orchids. But, I hope I'll see one of this rare species in 2006.Originally Posted by mervin
