    I was told by LFS that nana petite can grow directly in the soil, unlike nana which must tie to BW or something. Is that correct?

    As long as the rizhome is not buried into the substrate, any nana can be planted direct. Just bury the roots.

    Right, Java fern, Anubias can be planted in the gravel, as long as the rhizome (the thick green horizontal "stem") is not buried.
