    I have a Daeil 1/10 hp chiller. Thinking of upgrading to 1/5 or 1/4 hp for my 4ft x 2ft x 28" tank.
Info I got from the webby implied that the 1/10 hp can function up to 110 gallon / 416 litres tank. But it should be a stretch.

If my 1/10 hp chiller were to run 24hrs per day, for 30 days per month, the electricity bill comes to less than $10.
I reckon that upgrading my chiller by trading in will probably set me back by $300-400 or more.
Assuming the next 1/5 hp chiller runs only 12hrs, the saving per month is about $5.

So the pay-back period for the upgrade is at least 60 months or 5 years.

As I do not expect the chiller to last for 5 years, is there any justification to upgrade this 1/10 hp to a 1/5 or 1/4 hp chiller?

In any case, does anyone knows who of somebody who can upgrade the 'gut' of my 1/10 hp chiller to a 1/5hp?

I think Mr. Tan from System and Control Engineering can do it. But the overall cost would be the same as trading in and upgrading to another chiller.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

    Only $10 per month?
I always thought it was like $20+ at least per month

This is how I do my numbers..

    (75W x 24hrs x 30days)/1000 = 54 kWh per month.
Tariff as per http://www.singaporepower.com.sg/index.html is $0.2102 per kWh.
    So amount to pay = 54 x 0.2102 = $11.35.

So it is about $10 per month lah.
(you always round down when comes to justifying expenses, don't you?)

nope. you don't save the $5.
1/5 hp uses 2x the power of 1/10 hp. this is offset by running 1/2 the time.
however, you may save on chiller maintenance (wear and tear).

If so cheap then I'll seriously consider getting a chiller
Always thought they cost alot to run, like aircon.

Hmm. I think ur chiller will not run (compressor) 24hrs per day, rite? Probably 45mins running for every 2-3hrs?

If your chiller is indeed running 24hrs non-stop, this means that your chiller is under-powered for your tank already. It will break down due to wear and tear pretty fast.

    Cheers
