i'd prefer 2 units of the lower rated one
that way you can position them to cover more ground

I would opt for the 2X36W PL lights. It would be wiser to get something with parts available for replacement. 55W PL tube and ballast is not easily available in the market. If it's available, then it would be very costly.
Hi...i've one unit of 4 x 36 watts JBJ PL Lights for sale..----------------

For a 4x2x2 tank, is it better to have 2units of 2x36W PL light or 1 unit of 4x55W PL light? The latter is rated at 10,000K whereas the former is 6,500K. Is 55W PL light too strong for planted tank?
----------------
interested?..Pls PM me your contact number..
cheers
johnny
Oh yeah..... light temp around 6500k would be most ideal for planted tank. Higher temp would be good for cultivating algae....
4x36W is not enough for a 4x2x2 tank unless yours is all low light plant

totally agreed. i use 2 set of 4x36w for my 4x2x2. got mine from nature aquarium. each have two switches, i.e. u can turn on pair by pair of PL. so during the past hot days, i only turn on 3 pairs (6x36) PLs.----------------

don't think 4x36 is enough. just my opinion.
Wstan yr tank has 8x36pl i might as will suggest you using MH.

----------------] anyway didn't know about MH when i did the setup then. will definitely consider it if i have chance to re-do the tank. like hanging MH light as it makes the open tank look nicer. hv check out bioplast & dupla recently but ex. what other alternative? thanks.
i got mine from Gan a taiwan brand cost 350 a peice so i do encourage you to do it...it's cheaper in the long run. The light intensity doesn't change for 2 years.
Small fly usually are attracted to the bright light but once the fly touches the light *boink* down it goes as food for the fishes so sometimes u will see yr fishes keep looking towards the lightdo reconsider abt MH
Cheers!

interesting... what's the watt of the light? was at Gan on monday for fishes but find their equipments more ex than other lfs.----------------

WAtt is 150 per blub. If you will like to try petmart they selling the same brand of mH wif gan at 350 too.
You got to order from Gan ask him bring for u.

IMO, the heat emitted by MH is high, so without chiller or air con, a tank cannot operate with MH + AC fan only. Furthermore, the power comsumption of mh is high.
Just my 2 cents worth.![]()
Aquatic plants and LEGO collector.
MH light does indeed emit much heat, but the light is positioned abt 2ft above the water level will not necessary be hotter than the FL/PL position inches above the water line.
yup thats correct...they do emit high heat but due to the height of it, it doesn't.
Cheers!

u oso to have depend on how many.. for 4ft.. u need at least 2x70w or 2x150w to cover the whole 4ft length.. so doing yr maths.. nature selling 4x36watts PL at $188 (ard there).. if u dun intend to do any drilling then avoid using MH... if u set the light too high above then for sure u get the glare
I believe 2 sets of 2x36w FL is enough, even keeping HG. Got idea from Sam Yick Display tank in Marine Parade. They use 2 sets from JBJ. I think the ballast is important. Have another planted tank upgraded with e-ballast and plants thrive like wild fire(algae too!!). I think 8x36w overkill. Plants will grow too fast.Increase maintainance (trimmings) and electric bill. In the end wat plant u want to keep will determine the lighting type/wattage.Currently using 2x36w PL and 2x36w FL , both JBJ. My HG grows very short (1.5cm high) thru out the tank. But the ones in teo's tank grow long coz his light is only 2x36w FL . Got my hg from him and he thought I use a lawnmower to trim to that height! So u see it's the lights+ maybe the ballast use in the JBJ lighting. This is from my experience only
Setiardi,
I beg to differ, 2X36W is definately insuffice for a 4X2X2 planted tank. It's not even enuf for a 3ft tank.
actually 4x36w is enuff for low light plants for my 4x1.5x1.5ft tank.. but barely.. would like to add another pair in.. from that estimate, I think a 4x2x2 shld be ard 6x36w instead
Setiardi,
Missed the '2 sets' thing in your reply. 2 sets of 2X36W is still not enuf.... even for my 1m tank is not enuf.
I have 4X36W PL and 2X30W FL. Only with this config the plants are happy. My plants are mainly Echinodorus and crypts.
