oh, i forgot to say...i refer to him as master coz everybody else call him master.... surely whenever i discuss with him, it's always equal equal.... last night when i went for dinner with friends and met him at the fish tank, when he was talking cock to me, i was damn pissed, and am not usually the one scared of authority...he had to find an excuse to leave coz i was damn pissed by his remarks...

yeps, i saw that RH blog, very nice....

hmm funding is from hall fund..not JCRC fund for this one...basically from the money paid by residents...haha...

anyway, i always say,,,dun buy a big expensive tank if u dun buy the good equipment to go with it...

yeps, this morning i wake up in a better mood after reading all of your msgs... will not let this ruin my day today.... anyway he asked for a meeting with me this evening...see what cock he got more to say.....""thinking of bringing a friend with me in case I smash the tank to pieces when i get angry"" (usually quite uncontrollable when i am pissed) kidding..

I dun wanna waste my time educating him, coz he is the type of person who does not listen, but rather just talk....and talk... i have already refered to him some of the AQ materials, and URLS for the ADA competition tanks....

Anyway, .... just wanted to say a big thanks for the support...once in a while i will post pic of the tank such that we all get to see its evolution..though i am no longer maintaining it...

He wants a big tank with cheap equipment? SURE, that's not a problem. I'm running a 6ft tank on sunlight and almost no filter... Except that the damn thing looks like someone just dropped a nuke on it! Very Hiroshima-esque

So everytime he says cheap, show him my disaster.

i think you shouldn't give up hope on educating him on the maintainence of the tank... whoever takes over you the next round will just face the same problem if the master remain so ignorant. Hold your temper, talk to him properly about it this evening... and dont be so insistant on the T5s..lol..
Frankly with the plants in there.. there is no need for a set.. you can run the tank well with just 55watts pl or a lot of 36 watts..
I also think that your hall master has a low tech tank in mind.. and you.. have a high tech. one in mind... get taht sorted out.. cos the cost can be very very different

Understood... will be meeting him at 1630.... will speak calmly... will try to make him aware of the difficulties and job of those who maintain a planted fish tank.......

Yes ranma, will bear in mind the High tech vs low tech issue...you are partly right on the matter...but i just want to add, that the aquarium problem is just one of the many many problems the residents are having with the master..so i think this has reached the boiling point for me yesterday... I am sparing many of his remarks he made about the tank etc..anyway, since it is not longer a discussion on fish/plants/scaping///let's not talk about people anymore here..hahhaa... sorry i started it coz i think i needed to get that out of my system, and all the msgs have been great so far..

will only do these things because i dun wanna the next person taking over to experience the same thing....

Feeling much better now... Hope i can say the same after i speak to him...

Personally I think you did a good job there. I wouldn't choose the cabomba... it sticks out too much when it matures imho. Some of the rocks might not be nicely placed, like the one in the third picture bottom left; a rather awkward position.

    from what i know,

daniel (aka Dank of Arofanatics) tried to scaped the tank on his own. After which hegot the help of the Gratiola guys. personally, i felt that it was really a great effort on the part of daniel, who has since graduated. When i met up with him to exchnage plants, i remember seeing a RH Tank fund. He told me that the tank was donated, if i remmeber correctly. Taz_boy taking over the maintenance part right?

    To aquaobsession,

you are daniel chin's friend right?

If you fail to educate him, then maybe you should retreat from this project. Unless you have the resources and funding, it will be difficult to get firstly the hardscape right. it is much more difficult to find the perfect combination of wood and rock , than it is to get the perfect girlfriend you have to buy a lot of the hardscape material to find the best fit.

on another note, even if you get t5s and co2 injection, it will complicate the issue of plant maintenance. Base on looking at galleries, i would think that one should stick to the fern, crypt, echi, moss quartet if you want something that lasts long and low maintenence. T5s and Co2 will help the growth but the nature of the plant means that it wil require less trimming compared to stemmed plants.

well i hope everything goes well for you dude.

Well here's some ammo. In the long run, T5s are more cost effective. For eg. You only change the bulb once every 2 years!
You get more lumens for less watts!
They aren't as hot as PL lights!
Blah blah, modern technology blah blah, singapore's looking to the future etc etc

Go cheap on the lights (FL works well) and spend on a good CO2 system instead. 40% of a plants dry weight is carbon....remember that.

The light intensity seems good enough from the pictures.

Peter: wouldn't they save more with T5s considering we change T8 tubes twice a year?

The overflow area is the main area of loss if you seal the wet/dry section from air. Reducing the overflow to 2-3inches should help as does adding foam pads to the overflow area.

how to reduce the overflow?? my overflow system seems to be fixed.. mainly there is a huge pump in the bottom cabinet that is pumping water up in the water, and thus when reaches a certain level, the water overflow in the outbox to the bottom filter .... there does not seem to be a way to reduce the overflow by inches... maybe i am wrong, please advise on how you would do it...

standoyo,,, yeps it is something worth fighting for.. i have again written an email to master to have meeting where i will educate him about the basics of plant keeping and fish keeping as much as i can , given my knowledge about stuff.

    I resign
went not bad, but we cannot reach understanding. he thought i was in a position to accept all his critism, but i think i am in a position of someone who is volunteering for an office staff project (that has nothing do so with student activities) and deserve some respect.

all in all, office staff is now taking care, i made a blue print of the maintenance schedule. behind the scene, i let office staff know they will still have my full support, though i wun be on the front line.

i asked for a meeting with master again to educate him, but he is too busy, so i let go. i will be having a meeting with office staff tmr to teach them the very basic of fish and plant keeping..
