    I normally do, though some hobbyists only have theirs switched on when the lights come on.

    no fixed rule.
    running fans 24 hrs will cause more evaporation.

    I keep my fan on 24/7. It helps to minimise temp fluctuation.

    Me too. Also on my DIY fan 24/7 for my 1 ft cube tank. Temp can go down from 27-29 to 26-27. Not too bad if u ask me. But water evaporate faster too.

    on electric usage wise : 24/7 a week is better than getter a chiller.
    it really bring down the temp of the tank.

    no doubt that fans can help to reduce water temperature.
    however, only a chiller can cool the water temperature to below room ambient temperatures. and it does not cause evaporation.

    I have 2 sets of lights coming on and off at different timing to simulate morning, noon, evening and occasional cloud cover. So I didn't fix the fan to come on with the lights. On the fan for 24 hours, during lights up period, primary to keep the temp down and during lights off, to cause some form of slight surface turbulance as I dun use an air pump for my tank. Been using for the past year or so, so far so good. Only problem is the water evapourates just too fast.

    i have mine on a timer for 15 minutes every hour so the water doen't evaporate too much.

    I know that motor of a pump's life span will be shorten if it start/stop too often, I think it applicable to fan too as it is also run by motor.

    just to add on, regular switching on and off of the fan using the timer will wear out/ spoil ur adapter faster...so u may wan consider that too...
