Well most cichlids are not really good companions for tetras in the first place ( other than discus and angelfish perhaps ).
Best to keep them in a tank of their own instead of with fish the size of fish pellets []

Aiya you got quite a few tanks at home rite ? Convert one to keep such cichlids solely loh [:]

Yo jade, wow really sad to know your front jumped out.
    Thats VERY unusual.
Like i told you over the phone...they seldom jump unless water quality really that bad, or in spur of the moment jump out due to being attacked or chased around or something.

Which was the front that jumped out ? The new addition or the previous 2 you had ? Which tank are they in now and who are the tank companions ?

actually i will suggest larger tetras so you will much lesser worries. tetras like neon and cardinals are just too vulnerable.

i recommend bleeding hearts, bueno aires , lampeye ...you get the idea.

cichlids, get severum, festivums, uarus. firemouths are nice also. They look very natural together. Drawback is that some will nibble plants. So you have to be careful with their diet.

simon if you are using your 6ft, you can already have a school of silver dollars inside already

some other nice cichlids that can go in (although strictly these are not from the same region..if you are a purist..) are

    Sajica ,
Rainbow cichlids (i posted a pic of a pair titled "test" ),

i suggest you have a large clearing
and get some massive wood/roots .
    large pebbles can be scattered

    plant large plants more loosely

the fish will be more at home

a "regular" planted tank doesnt really suit

ya, do like those tank at the Interzoo. wood and rocks dominate and plants, mostly echinos, crypts and ferns, can serve as accents. no need so much maintenance except change water. but cichlid tank cannot put base fert.

art.....it's the bigger fronto.very sad no mood to work this morning.
anyway i think the convict is the main culprit have them remove to their own tank.
Yesterday bought 7 pcs fronto.about 2cm only.now looking for bigger to replace the lost one.
new addition to the moorii tank 4pcs of labeotropheus trewavese.

this is how fish like fronts should be spaced...In this tank, i had 3 6" young oscars and one 10" male jaguar.
this tank is a 4x2. You should aim for minimum this size to house 4 or 5 fronts more comfortably in the longer run.
As they grow, you really dont need anything else in the tank to look beautiful....let the fish be the focal point

    ----------------

    LSZ,
Just to check if your setup will still be OK when the oscars and jaguar are full sized. Will they fight excessively? What kind of water change is needed for this tank

    Thx

actually it will be more comfortable for 3 oscars.
but if the jaguar is compatible (often not the case) it is still ok. But no more.

yeah this tank can hold them full size but nothing else as it will be a little crowded already.

this tank is filtered by 2x2217s in series.
one of them is nothing but ehfisubstrate and the other packed with filter foam sponge and wool etc etc.

water change is 50% every 4days

and yeah simon, you need protection over your base fert if you are gonna use!

either that, perhaps you can plant echinos in large shallow pots (can buy those rectangular ones for bonsai there are big ones) or boxes with the fert inside and wrap up with mesh or whatever way to protect
but not very sure if grow of the echinos will be affected if placed in pots or not

    can still conceal mah

but i think a fert base can be difficult for some of the species

    severums will dig, festivums also.
    uarus not diggers.

oscars are diggers, beggers, jumpers and poo-ers

Do you guys think if I get a tank maker to partition off 1/2ft off a 4x2x2 to use as an internal overflow system, the filtration will be enough for 2 10" cichlids that eat and poop a lot?

For that matter, if this 1/2ft is used as a internal overflow system, would it be enough filtration?

    Thx

    i will not do that
    tank space is too precious

anyway, i feel if you maximise filtration space in your partition, the filtration is ok for 2 large fish. No less.

and i suggest a canister or some external filtration anytime

Hi, cichlids normally do not jump. But it is a good idea to cover all your prize collections.

Some cichlids are super jumpers, whether the water is right or not-
The Peacock Bass(South American) and the boulengerochromis (Tanganyikan)jumps.
They startled easily, and their normal reaction is to jump out of the water.

Oh BTW, my Frontosa also committed suicide recently. So apparently we need to add one more jumpers to the list.....
