Try full water... LFS keep them that way for better control... But they look miserable being kept that way...
Enjoy these buggers... If I REALLY have space for them, I would set up a tank just for them..![]()

I'm crypt collecting... Starting cheap, now have Cryptocoryne beckettii, C.beckettii var petchii, C.crispatula var.balansae, C.griffithii(Melted!), C.nurii, C.parva, C.pygmaea(Melted!
), C.tonkinensis(Melted!
), C.walkeri, C.wendtii 'Brown', C.wendtii 'Green', C.wendtii 'Green Gecko', C.wendtii 'Tropica' and Cryptocoryne x willisii
Oh, juggling is hard work, man!...
Fully submerged is prefered for them. If possible a piece of drift wood where they can occasionally climb up and take a peek at the world above.
Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?
Hmm...this bugger looks familiar..![]()
Something about the water & the fishes that calms me down.
Crayfish can get REALLY curious and they are often strong enough to flip open unfastened tank lids. Mine took a walk around my room the whole night...
By the way, forget about having any live plants. These guys will uproot and eat them in due time. They also have a habit of using my drift wood as training weights...ha ha...they are fun to keep and watch indeed!
Oh yes, they CAN live outside water, that's why the LFSs kept them that way... Better to restrict their ability to climb out of the tank...![]()

unfortunately, keeping neon tetras with crayfish are a big no-no...yes, they will become part of the crayfish menuOriginally Posted by tango
. My crayfish actually feeds on guppies, ghost shrimp and Hikari algae pellets.
I have about 20 malayan shrimp that keep my crayfish company...I think they camouflage themselves to the drift wood and are pretty good at avoiding the crayfish (about a year now).
Er...wood is part of crayfish diet? How? They don't exactly have teeth to gnaw at it right? Amazing!Originally Posted by thptan

They probably can use their claws to grind up the wood...
Actually they press their mouth parts to the DW and bite it off in little chunks. The next day their poop is solid and brown. Think they do it when they're hungry or something.
Had these guys in my office when I was in camp. Plants are fine, just get fast growing ones that have deep roots or ones that attach to DW. And make sure you crayfish is well-fed.
Cherax quadricanatus if I'm not wrong, are from western australia, so please don't release them into our river systems...
more water equals better water quality.
they need good filtration as they dirty the water quick.
benny's suggestion on a DW would make it more interesting for the critters.
but do give enough space (about a body length to 1.5) from the edges.
i had one that did a spiderman number on an overhead filter piping.
luckily the combination of the filter and light set prevented him from getting out.
one morning i got up and found one missing.
i was frantic and looked around the floor.
eventually i gave up and went to work.
while walking down to the ground floor the bugger greeted me at the end of the stairs.
that's two floors down btw...![]()

Well, I'll do my part in getting rid of them: Crayfish on the halfshell!![]()
You'll need:
- 4 large crayfish
- 1 tablespoon of butter
- salt and pepper for taste
- 1 large frying pan![]()
- 1 big sharp knife
Here's what you do:
1) Leave crayfish in a pail of fresh water for 24 hours to purge them.
2) Place CF on the chopping board. The brain is slightly behind the eyes. Push the knife into the brain and cut the CF in half. Be quick about it, just because they're pests doesn't mean they don't have feelings...
3) Using any means that're convenient at the time, butter the INSIDE of the CF liberally.
4) Add leftover butter and CF to the pan.
5) Set flame to high and "BBQ" until the shells are red and slightly burnt.
Serves 2.
Thank my grand aunt from Australia for the recepie. It's a common BBQ dish over there. Goes down good with fosters(replace with nice wholesome milk should you be underaged)![]()
