Will a trio (not sure about males or females) do okay in a standard Fiveplan 1.5ft heavily planted tank? Main reason for me not to get a 2ft is because of transportation issues.

Get at least 6-8 to dilute the effects of aggression... too few and the pecking order will result in the least aggressive fish dying quickly.
Personally, I feel they are good only for species tanks, or with very small/unobstrusive tankmates like boraras (which they are found together with in nature).
6 in a 1.5ft... not too much fish?
I'm planning on keeping them as a speicies tank in a non-CO2.
Without sufficient space or large enough numbers, 3 chocolates in a 1.5ft tank is a recipe for disaster.
They are highly aggressive towards their own kind in establishing a pecking order, as mentioned by Budak. If you cannot provide a 2ft tank for the 3 chocolates, do not keep them. The weakest fella will definitely die and chances are, only 1 will remain alive.
Only youngsters will be happy in small numbers in a 1.5 ft tank but they grow slowly and will also establish a pecking order.
They are an easy enough species for me, but will die in the hands of those who do not meet their requirement for live foods and slightly acidic water. There will be a few specimens that will take dried foods but those are rare cases.
I am speaking from experience. Don't suffer the same fate as I did ages ago.

they take dried tubifex for me..so i guess i'm lucky.. although i do also think the 1.5ft is a bit small leh..
