Hey guys,

Does anyone of you tried the DIY Fan method using CPU fans?? I got a question... how to link it to our normal Power Socket instead of using the computer? Does SLS sell those that oredi modified to connected to socket? *sigh* my 1ft tank aR... temperature rather hot.. so want to setup the fan... Thanks

all those fans take 12 VDC, standard adapter's for walkman etc support that conversion.

you just need to change the CPU power socket with something else.. (get from sim lim tower).

my biggest problem is the cpu fan got nothing to grip to the tank...

y dun u get those found in lfs? they come with clipon.. save u the trouble to DIY a stand.. for me, I got a colleague to custom make a fan rack that can support 2 AC fans

What do you have in the 1ft tank. If you have fan I think it may drop the temp for abt 3~4 degree depending on the size of the fan. So there a must to cool down the tank, if not just let it be. Most fish have no problm with that temp.

to attach to tank is quite a simple thing to do. two long sticks, tie and hang it over, dunno if you get the idea.

anyway, i have seen many methods, just a little creativity. There is a place near sim lim, across the thief market, you'll see many shops down there. explore a bit, I cannot give explicit directions but there is a shop or two that sells ONLY fans. Check it out, fans of all sizes and shapes.

Imagine in your air con offices, put one fan, i wonder how the tank will fare. Quite good I expect.

I DIY mine.

Go to the shop behind Edison (selling hi0fi stuff). Get a 12 V DC fan. Also get a set of socket that matches one of the output plug from your AC-Dc adaptor so that you dun have to cut away the plugs attached to the adaptor. You can reuse any of those adaptor lying around your house.

Cost of fan - $5.
socket - $0.50
adaptor if you dun have - $10 try to fine those with current that matches the fan, < 500mA shd work well.

AC fan is more ex, noisy, heavier and also dangerous IMO. imagine what if it drops into the tank ??!

Use bluetac or silicon to secure the fan if needed. You can run at 6v-12v depending on the speed needed.

comp fan is easy if you already have the holes pre-drilled in the casing. I installed 2 12V fan in my cpu after my p4 cpu konked out twice. luckily still under warranty so just swap cpu. but now cpu is noiser due to the fans. touch wood ... so far so good.

buy the computer 5v/12v white plastic connectors from the shop behind Edison at SLS. They came in a set of male and female. you just need one. get some screws and square nuts as well. mounted the fans, wires the leads into the connector and find a spare power supply and you are in business. there are 2 pairs of wires ... 5v and 12 v. test before connecting the wires to the plastic connector.

costs about $14 in total ... fans, screws and connector.

but if you dun have pre-drilled holes for fans in your casing or space is tight ... pay a little more and go for those card-type that you can insert into one of the PCI slots ... somewhere near the cpu or graphic card where most heat come from.
