stone wall in planted tank

Has anyone done a stone wall with plants as a background.... any pictures??? on the back of the tank

Oh and how to secure the stones and rock to the tank glass???

For my tank I used black styrofoam. Look quite ok at a low cost... some others used corkbark. Very nice, but beware the price of the corkbark don't come cheap.

for a stone wall, you need a rubber cushion at the tank bottom.

it is also advisable if you have a rack that is slightly terraced to house rocks in separate levels. the terrace rack has a relatively broad base and spreads the weight more. so if you imagine the rack is just something like a steep stairway. use wood and you can even stapler ferns into the crevices and exposed wood not covered by the rocks.

But you have to home-make it yourself...whcih i love!

you can use styrofoam for cushioning as well.

when you stack you rocks, quite advisable to use silicon to hold them in place especially when it is steep.

vinz silicon i found doesnt hold rocks well so i recommend agsint that as the only measure

LSZ, i agree. It's only an additional measure.

To be clear, the rocks should be set up so that it is stable in the first place. Silicon is to prevent accidental movement.

silicon is just but another option.. the best way of placing the rocks (as what i do for my marine) is to ensure that each rock to be placed on top of each other, must have at least 3 points of support or contact (that is provided we not talking abt smooth pebbles here). The contacts will enable the rocks to "anchor" itself and stablised itself.... but from what i read in this post, my impression is that he is trying to make the entire background or glass at the back with rocks.. in that case, the glass should not be able to hold... hey..how do you silicone it??..do you silicone just only the perimeter only??...or the whole board filled with silicone??...i've tried before using this back styrofoam...but after few months later, the whole board float up...<laugh>...

i think the another alternative is get those fibre glass stone look like.. aquamart and petmart has them..

Considering the price of real stone, that may not be a bad idea. Anybody has a rough idea of the prices of the fibreglass backgrounds?
