    Hi

Anyone has any experience breeding pencil fish?

I have about 8 golden pencil fish (3 males, 5 females) in my tank and recently notice a baby pencil fish swimming around amidst the plants. It has already grow to about half a inch long. Must be the sole survivor of the batch.

Will appreciate if anyone can share any experience on this.

    Thanks.

    Hi richy,

I've split the post out for a separate discussion. Here are some older threads for reference.

From the looks of it, I think most of the spawnings reported here are accidental. However, I do know that there are some farms in Lim Chu Kang breeding Nannostomus beckfordi for export. So this should be a fairly easy and prolific breeder.

mickthefish is an experienced breeder. Maybe he can give you some tips if you are seriously considering to breed them.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

    hi richy,
it's pretty straight forward to spawn pencils, the tank need only to be a small tank eg 12x8x8 ins, set it up with a small sponge filter, barbles on the base and 2 wool-mops, use water that has stood over-nite place the pair in the night before you intend to spawn them, they usually spawn at the first light , when the female looks thinner take the pair out, cover the tank as the eggs are light sensitive at around 5-6 days the fry should be free swimming. the first foods for the fry should be infusoria or liquafry no 1 for egg-layers as they grow give them crushed flake, bbs and micro worms, at around 4-5 mths the fry are ready to be put in your community tank.
this method can be used for most of the pencils, best of luck .
