wow..so fast...you just got my male aga couple of days back![]()
Any chance of a successful spawn with cories around?
Am asking because I think my aga pair are ready & in breeding colours, female has turned extremely yellow & they are close. Male chasing away steel blue I have in the tank too.
Or any thing I can put in the tank to boost chances?

If they are already in spawning mood, I don't think there is a need to try to boost chances by adding more fishes. In fact, this will likely to increase casualty rate for the fries later.
Yeah genes, apparently the female was ready even before your male came over, so guess she didn't give him much time to wait.
But I guess this first time could be lost. Because I'm a newbie to them breeding.
Just want to find out if there are some type of artificial "cave" I can add to help them 'get a room' for the next time. That's what I meant kray.
Like those mini ceramic pots? I've seen in some of the pics here, where do u guys get them?
What do you have in the tank? You could add in ceramic cave, pots etc for the female to lay eggs in. Driftwood will do fine as well.
Here's an earlier thread on caves for dwarf cichlids.
In my opinion, I think there should be enough plants/decoration to break the line of sight between the two fishes when they are in the tank. This will give some respite to the courting couple, which can sometimes end in death if one party is over zealous.
I also find dither fishes good in calming down the courting couple. As these are tempremental creatures, they need to be reassured. Not that you need a lot of distraction, I find that usually one or two small characin (my preference - mid to top level and South American) will suffice. Best to get some that is around 2 to 4 cm.
Corydoras spp. are scanvengers and potentially egg hunters. This will cause undue stress to the spawning dwarf cichlid and reduce your chances. Best to avoid if possible. However, having said that, I have successful dwarf cichlid spawns in an extremely crowded 1 ft tank and crawling with corydoras. Seems like if they are determined enough, nothing will stop them.
Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?
The difficulty lies in the raising of the fries, if left in a community tank.
Surprisingly enuf,i managed to do that...i have like 5 viejita red fries still alive with me.My pair spawned inside a 2ft tank with 8 other apisto inside.no casualties due to fighting but one died due to illness.Originally Posted by lwm999
You would probably have more surviving fries, if there are no other tankmates.Originally Posted by outspoken
Thanks for the link benny.
Too bad they don't sell those caves here.
Looks like have to go to some quarry & find a piece of stone to work on![]()
What to do, I like both apistos & cories.![]()
Yup i agree but they are in community tank, wasn't even suppose to able to breed and fries was not suppose to be alive but somehow they manage to it, to my surprise.Originally Posted by kray
