Thinking of getting a pair of Dicrossus filamentosus. So how do I choose a pair if none has already formed up? Are there colour differentiation or some features I should look for? Any help would be great for a newbie like me

Not all male filamentosus have lyretail, but i have a way to get a pair. depend on the shop u purchase and the stability of the fish. cos dun want to inflict loss to the lfs who are willing to bring in the fish. btw fish collect from different location`, have different marking on the caudal.

Read on Kribs (with a pinch of salt) that the reddish ventral fins depend on the locality. Hmmm... *shrug*

The previously mentioned Linke and Staeck confirm this in their book. The males of these two populations also show differences in their tail patterns.
    joe, some good reads, http://www.thekrib.com/Apisto/D-filamentosus.html.

i beg to differ, over the years ive had these fish , i always buy 6 fish and these are immature ones i pick three with the red ventrals, once home they are seperated into 3 tanks , in each tank one red ventral and one clear are placed and ive never failed to get a pair and breed them, if this is mythology as the book states, was it just dumb luck that i could sex them every time?

Actually, i seen male with red ventral. So usually is that i slightly frightened the suspected female to look for the black marking at the base of the ventral. Successful getting 2 pairs befor they died. One pair spawned but no fries.
