    Hi,

just wanted to enquire on the placement of the filter media in an external canister ..

top to bottom which type to place?
filter pads, bio balls, ceramic rings.

Is all the external canisters flow direction the same?

It would be useful if you could provide the brand/model of your filter in order to get more reliable replies.

Anyway, generally speaking, it is not recommended to put bioball in a canister filter, coz they take up a large volumn, yet do not provide much surface area for the beneficial bacterial.

    - Ceramic Ring (bottom)
    - Active Carbon (or coarse media)
    - Fine media.

    Cheers,

Seemed like no one answering your question yet. I don't use atman so I can't say for sure, but you can do this by inspection...

I suppose your canister filter will have 2,3,4 baskets rite? Is there a tube-like structure in each basket? When stacked together, this tube will be connected to the inflow of your filter? if so, then the flow direction is probably bottom to top. Hoep this helps.

    Atman cannister filters are bottom-up!
The arrangement from top to bottom as follows:
Fine filter pad--->substrate----> courase filter pad then you ceramic rings.

And yes, you need to remove the bag before adding to the filter!
The mesh bag is for you to rinse the CR before putting them in!
Try to rinse with hot water to clear the pores of the ring!

    Just to share my setup:

    From bottom to top:
Ceramic rings and biohome en masse
    Coarse sponge
    Fine wool

Usually there's instructions printed on the box (Atman).
If coarse wool/sponge comes first (bottom) then water flows from bottom to top.
The fine wool would be last(top) whatever you place in between I guess not important.
