Sciaenochromis ahli- "Beauty need not come at a price"

These are the ahlis in my shop, 12 pieces, 5- inch size, on sale at $10 each.
Photos were just taken only yesterday.

The name Sciaenochromis ahli was derived from another group of fishes - Sciaenidae because it was thought that the ahli resemble the fishes in this family due to the almost horizontal lower jaw.

Popularly known as Electric Blue Hap in the aquarium trade, the ahli grows to 8 inches in size for males, and 6 inches for females. Females are dull while the males in breeding dress is a stunning blue.

Make no mistake, the look is that of a predator. The ahli hunts for small fishes among the rocks of Lake Malawi. It is extremely shy but the ease in breeding them ensures a good supply.

Maintenance - Although the fish comes from Malawi, it is adaptable to normal water. However, for successful keeping and colours, it is better to use coral as filter medium or substrate. Malawi buffer is good, according to my experience.

Watch out for fishes it can swallow.
And it will bully larger ones such as the less aggressive peacocks.

Managed to keep mine in a group without fatal accidents.

Lighting - African Rift Lake cichlids do not show well in bright white lights. The metallic blue, turqouise and red show best in dimmer lightings, preferably those with some UV in them.

The positioning of the lighting is important. If the light is placed such that the fish is between you and the light, the colours will be dull grey. If the light is between you and the fish (from plan view), the colours will show. The best of the blue colours will be seen if the light falls on the fish at an angle or perpendicular to the side body of the fish you are viewing. If the light is overhead, the effect is not as great.

Feeding is simple. But it is good to supplement pellets with some life food.

Mylochromis lateristriga " These jaws are meant for digging"

    Only 2 are available - 5 inches , $40 each.
latus refers to the sides, striga means streak. This fish is sometimes exported, but rarely. them Never seen here yet. It is large by aquarium standards - 9 inches for males. It is a shore fish that tends to stay close to vegetation. The long snout enable it to dig into the sand deeper than other fishes and get larger animals to eat than other fishes could. This is not a mouth brooder. It spawn on a rock or the sand.
