Kradeij, why are there air bubbles in your substrate??

Something about the water & the fishes that calms me down.
I tink it appeared with the algae. I am also puzzled over why there is air bubble in the substrate. Wats the possible cause for it?Originally Posted by michael lai

Looks like normal green algae to me. Just stick your finger in and run it a bit.
That part of the tank may be exposed to some stray light.
Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?
Used a ruler to scrap it off. Thanks!
Now that u mentioned it, that part of the tank is exposed to the morning sun.

Benny,
I also have this type of algae appearing on the side of my tank where it gets indirect sunlight like kradeij's tank.
It has been reappearing even though I tried to remove it by scraping and scooping off whatever gets into the water column. I also siphoned the area 'clear' of the algae visually, topped with some new lapis sand. However, a week later, it will reappear.
There are also some trapped air in my substrate like what's shown in kradeij's pictures.
Is this the 'bacteria' you were talking about the last time I mentioned it?
It feels like a thin layer of green film and usually appears on the substrate.
When this algae attaches itself on the plants, especially for runners, it spreads to other areas of the tank where it was previously not affected.

I do have the same problem as you.
I think the algae is formed because of direct sunlight.
Maybe you can block the sunlight off...

Not really, it could be due to reflection of top light from the glass and the lack of water circulation in those area. I had those even though there were not much sun light entering my room.Originally Posted by Dave

and probably because there's substrate fertiliser added??? (is there?)
then there's light... then with the fertiliser not comsumed there's algae...
Thanks for sharing.
I do have some root monsters and and root fertilizer sticks in the substrate (no base fert though).
Wonder if anyone has successfully removed these algae eventually? And how did you do it?
Or is it just common to find them in the tank.

It's pretty common sight in tanks. Just check out those mature tanks at our LFS.![]()
