No you don't.You should use it on its own and do not add base fert, it already contains enough minerals.
Dear all,
Just like to check if i am using the above-mentioned in the title, do i still have to add in gravel on top of the substrate? hehe....my friend just gave me a big new packet (approx 9L) but then i using white sand in my tank now...so never have the chance to use this substrate...=)

Oh coz i read in other threads that ADA PowerSand can also be used as the base fertilizer before topping the tank with AquaSoil....Hmmz....i am confused liao...hahaha
Never considered using PowerSand, might help, but so far I am doing pretty well with ADA soil amazonia on its own. I do dose a drop of seachem flourish and a drop of oceanfree iron fert once a week for the extra perk to my plants.
That's what ADA recommends, but people have reported good results with just Aquasoil alone. I myself have good results with Aquasoil alone, but Powersand is supposedly a real booster for the plants.Originally Posted by alantan9
ooo....aiya but then if i was to replace my white sand with the aqua soil...it would be a very major project sia...think need 1 whole day to do all this plus the rescaping which i am not very good at....
powersand added unless u try to keep Tonina or hungry plants...it will help your plants grow bigger and fatter and nicer ...Originally Posted by alantan9
my 5ft got base JBL fertilizer + ADA black soil mix with ADA powersand, result for tonina is damn good... grow bigger size and healthy..
Oh so where can we buy this powersand? Btw, just like to check whats the market price for a bag of ADA AquaSoil amazonia? one bag roughly how many kilo? Thanks
I guess NA at thomson should have stock tel:62556051. ADA soil normal packing is 9L=5kg cost $35.
get the black one better it last longer base on experience planter comments...
oh okie thanks a lot.....hii....but then i am still seriously considering the rescaping project coz i know it is very tedious taking out the 7kg of white sand in my 2.5ft tank...oh my god...hahaha
I think when you see the result, you wil find your effort worthwhile!
Moreover, dun you find it rather hard to maintain the white sand clean!
Think it would be wise to change to AquaSoil!
You can get pack of 2L Powersand of around $34!
PowerSand Special have been treated with Backtar 100!
Ya actually quite agree that white sand gets dirty very easily....hmmz...maybe i should go n get the powersand that everyone is toking about....coz i got free ada aquasoil amazonia at home now...haha. Felt that its abit wasted not to use them...
If you have Powersand as base, try to have a thick enough ADA Soil above. Otherwise when pulling up plants with long roots later, some of the white powersand will appear above the soil, which looks odd and not easy to "push" them down again.
The reason why they use PS, NO3 does not bind to clays..............ADa soil is clay, the PS is pumice.Originally Posted by |squee|
the problem with pumice and anions like NO3-, they are highly mobile and leech out of the substrate rapidly. The NH4 is stuck to the clay and the plant roots slowly extract it.
So if you dose KNO3(genenrally have to anyhow), then you will never need PS, this is what I predicted and this is what appears to be the case.
KNO3 dosing is cheap and negates the use of PS.
I really feel powersand is not a useful product, it adds mainly PO4/NO3, two thigns we already add through water column dosing.
No, Tonia, other plants do NOT grow fatter, faster, better etc with Powersand, if you dose the water columnn as well.
I've found the ADA system with PS works poorer than if you use EI + ADA soil alone.
So have many others.
Powersand also has the type of nutrients that do not stay down there for long, theyb leech into the water column and then after 1-2 months, most of the nutrients are gone.
Pumic(powersand) has no exchange sorption capacity, clay on the other hand(ADA soil) does.
This allows the soil to act as a magnet for nutrients, while the pumice rinses the nutrients off rapidly.

Hi,
I just like to clear up some more doubts regarding this base fertilzer. Now i have 1 bag of aquasoil and 1 bag of normal quartz gravel sand...Which one should be at the top and which one at the bottom? And also if the quartz gravel is on top of aquasoil, do i plant the roots of my stemmed plants right into aqua soil which is at the bottom? Can anyone advise me on this? Thanks a lot
Aquasoil is not a base fertilizer. It is meant to be used by itself or with Powersand at the bottom.
Do not lay gravel on top of the Aquasoil. Simply plant directly into the Aquasoil.

I think you will do better with just AquaSoil alone or with PowerSand, not gravel!
IMO, i will not mix the two!
It sort of spoil the feel!
I agree, just use the ADA soil, skip the gravel.
