my java fern is infected with black spot algae..would it be advisable to cut the affected leaves or just throw the whole driftwood away?

Show us a picture. It would well be the new leaves will be growing out from the dying parts of the old leaf.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Black spots on Java Fern can be spores where plantlet will grow from.

Issit the top of the fern or the underside of the fern?
Top would probably be algae while bottom is the spores...

my java ferns has not black, but brown velvety patches which looks like a coat of rust on the top side of the leaves. I wonder if its the same problem as yours. In my case the leaf seems to be still alive as plantlets are appearing. Any experts care to shed some light?

It may be a very obscure case of aquatic disease. It's been mentioned before, and I've heard of it although I've not seen it myself.

Like benny said, a good picture will allow people to see better. Words can only do so much.

After all you have the great option of throwing the plant away and getting new plants altogether. Java fern isn't exactly expensive.

i think if the ferns are too infested, it is advisable to cut off the whole leaves, or quarantine the whole plant, then rub off the algaes, and apply some algae away medicines, before deciding what to do when they are better. this is to prevent the algae from spreading
