After a recent internal bacteria episode wiped out most of my tetras, I begin to wonder if I should QT fishes Do you guys QT your new fishes? If you do, what and how do you do it? Just get a spare tank, add a simple sponge filter and add the new fishes inside? Monitor for sickness and if 2 weeks (min.) passes without signs of disease, you can safely place them into the main tank?

    Hi Joe,
For me it depends on the source where the fish came from and how fragile is the fish. If it's fragile usually I do some research before commiting. I usually acclimatise them only, 2 hrs temp, 2 hrs water chemistry. But I do have a quarantine 3 footer and a 1 footer for emergencies. I also practise the survival of the fittest theory so actually the tanks are there for future expansion... just joking. But I have encountered disease that have dumbfounded me. The rasbora vaterfloris disease which seems to affect only the rasbora vaterfloris being 1 of them. So the tanks kind of act as my experiment tanks too.
My quarantine tanks are fully equipped, sort of like sick bay for precious fishies.

And are these tanks run all the time? 24/7 hospital?

I guess I don't need these while I only keep common cheap fish.

I don't mean it like that Terence. Not the value of the fish but the sentiments attach to it or the group. Harlequins has long hold a special place in my heart, actually all rasboras...Keke. Just ask Nicklaus how long I chase him for the Vaterfloris...HeeHee really brings back memories.
