Ahem... Think we went through this before...

The South American fish we normally keep are not deep water fish, neither are they fast water fish. They are usually found in the shallower waters near the river banks of the Amazon system. Surprisingly, the water temperature can go as high as 35C, as mentioned in field reports. The fish are, of course, fine with that temperature.

Actually, a lot of shallow water tropical fish do not appreciate low water temperatures. The same thing applies to almost all tropical river fish. This includes Discus, Angels, a lot of tetras, bettas etc...

Anyway, a sudden drop of 3 degrees will bring about a temperature shock and thus causes stress and leads to parasite/protozoan infection... A gradual drop, however, will not pose any problems...

Bettas? aren't they southeast-asian? Anyway, the tiny stream in venus drive is COLD even at 2 in the afternoon. I understand amazonian fish can survive ridiculouly high temperatures but doesn't that usually come into play in the dry season? Which might lead to reports of them in 35 degree water, since that's when they're collected?

You see, our tiny little water system is highly shaded and the water is running fast...
