ooh so it'll just be some cool new finnage... like triple red with a flash tail etc.

if they are the same species, then you are not creating new gene pools, you are just selecting which genes to express.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

If I were a fish, I'd BREED all Day!

Or even cockatoo patterns with orange coloration?

Anyone knows if this is a variant of A. cacatuoides? Happened to come across it in RVA's website.....it says Apistogramma cacatuoides From Careiro, wild K2

i can only see one problem in doing this, if you mix these two colour strains and they get in the shops what will you be buying as it's niether one or the other?, the people who set the colour strain like the triple red did a lot of work to getthe fish we buy, are the lads thinking of doing the mix are they going to spend the time to fix the colourstrain?.

This is sweet... pink and yellow, my little girl would love this... like power-puff girlsOriginally Posted by Cacatuoides

I doubt it mick, I think it's more of a case of discussions to foster a better understanding of two things.Originally Posted by mickthefish

To develop a distinctive color variant is not a joking matter and requires discipline in line breeding and maintenance. It also require ready access to a gene pool as well as a good understanding of fish genetics. Definitely not for the beginners.
Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

thought not, ive been trying to set a finnage strain on some guppy's for the last 2yrs i'm not even half way there yet , its a bugger of a thing to do as i don't even like guppy's. haha

not at all mick....the thought just came to us so we merely expressed it in the forum for more opinions and discussions, never wanting to explore the dangerous and the unknown.....its good to discuss such topics to foster better understanding :0

i have two pairs of apistos in my tank, a.panduro and a.agasizi fire red, my female panduro has started to go in to a cave and does wiered courting dances with my male fire red agasizi , will they crosss breed as they look like they will spawn , they also dance face to face, it looks like they are kissing ,
shefki.![]()

I do not think its courtship going on but rather territorial aggression taking place. Also do not think they are kissing but attempting to jaw lock...jaw locking occurs when they try to drown each other. Do monitor and separate them if need be.

fnx eugene for replying, i will take that into concideration, my male panduro is guarding around his territory now and the female is looking in good shape so hopefully they will spawn , the fire reds do not go near the panduros cave , so i think they have learnt a lesson from interfearing with the panduros, again i am pleased u replied as i know of your good knowledge in apistogramma, i consistently read your article in pfk for knowledge and inspiration, by the way do you still have your ei method planted tank![]()

Thanks mate. I have given up on planted tank due to work commitments.

they can be very hard work at times
what fish do you now keep in the tank, oh yh and could you please tell me wether it is okay to keep a few yellow snkeskin or yellow steel guppys in with my apistos as dither fish , i have 2x fire red agasizi and 2x panduro, as i have been deeply inspired by your divided tanks
do you think that i can keep a large male betta aswell or will that be a wrong combination,
fnx![]()

Tank now consists of some apistos, plecos and corydoras now. I would agree with your guppies as dithers and disagree with the betta, especially when you specify large... I kept endlers as dithers and they have also spawned readily in low pH waters.

nicei have also taken to adisagreement on the betta , i have brought a trio of green cobra guppys and my female panduro is now in a small cave at the back of my tank she stays there with my male panduro , and they only come out when i feed them with brineshrimp, my male has also become a slate blue colour with yellow on the edges of his pelvic fins and my female has black markings and she has turnt more yellow than she was,

There might be a possibility that there be a clutch of eggs in the caves from your description. If not, she is ready to breed. Goodluck mate!
