hi all. i will be grateful if any seasoned buddies on this board can let me know if they know the answer to the following:

what is the longest braceless open tank that can be commissioned in singapore? which tank builders can build tanks with the necessary thickness?
is 3 metres overly ambitious and unrealistic? how much will it cost on average? any clues anyone?

i am not in singapore at the moment, but am planning for a new tank at my pad in singapore.

    thanks.

I'd imagine a tank like that would cost something like $10,000 to $20,000. I've been considering(desperately hoping to get) a 4m(12ft) for my future home. myself. Good luck with yours

hello from london buddy. thanks for replying. quite happy that somebody saw my message really. do you know whether a tank of 3 m or indeed 4m length is feasible without braces (centre or euro)? have you checked with local companies? what is the recommended glass thickness? which cos are willing to do it? if you have called, or are planning to call to find out, I will be so grateful if you can let me know buddy. i just need to know whether its feasible or not.

what kind of tank are you planning for? i am planning for an all-out top of the line planted one. hope that we can stay in touch.

-Sigh- you meet all the rich people on these forums... The recommedned thickness for mine was 25mm I'd imagine yours would be much much more unless it was braced externally... And at that thickness you'd get a very visable green tint if you used float glass(regular glass).

Oh, here's a few replies I've gotten from assorted tank makers:

    hi

we dun make acrylic tanks even though we have a subsidiary doing acrylic works.

In Singapore, the technology and skill to fabricate acrylic tank is not proven. Mostly, for specific project, germany import technology and expertise is required, and task the cost could be substantially high.... interms of 6 figures.

I can't answer u about whether glass tank after 10 years is still working fine.

first, we believe, the bottom structure is very important. If we construct the bottom structure too, then more than 10 yrs is not an issue. In Zoo, the front glass for polar bear has been 8 yrs now.

In Senotosa, the gigantic marine tank using glass has been since 1985.

    Hope these answer yr questions.

this tank required specific support in order to save the costs. First wat structure is sitting on?

    Rgds.

Probably for your info; we have done full glass 19mm tank on 10'x4.5'x3' for a customer at Yio Chu Kang. the cost of tank alone is around S$20k

These were the only two with experience in making large tanks. I doubt they've done braceless though. And for jobs like that I'd recommend www.greenchapter.com They're the best i've heard of or seen locally. And they'll aquascape for you too. Try PMing lorba, he's manages GC and he's a mod here. Nice guy

hollering out to GC!! if you read this post, please reply mate... i am wondering about the feasibility of a braceless tank of 3m. care to comment please? is it possible? what is the recommended glass thickness?

XnSvd, what can u share with me abt glass distortion? your post seems to suggest that wven with float glass the distortion will be inevitable? any stats? what refraction index r we talking about? would say 25mm starphire glass help perhaps?

Off the top of my head? floatglass admits something like 80+% of the light whereas starphire(called crystal glass over here) should be in in the high 90s range. That and it's 5am over here. I should be asleep

from my half-hearted quote sourcing, i believe they will only go up to a max size of 4' x 1.5' x 1.5' for braceless tanks. bowing of the glass panel is the concern.

from my own experience, with a 4' by 1.5' width and 2' height, the centre brace fell off and when i put it back there was a gap of about 12 to 15 mm! never thought about it before but seeing it really puts the bowing into perspective for me.

another possiblity is to consider building the tank into one side of your house. but i wouldn't recommened you to consider this if you are in an apartment...

Once I had a 5' X 2' X 2' for my marine, 12mm thickness, braceless! Cost me $2k in 1996. The glass I chosed was float glass, with the front piece tempered. According to the guy who made it that tank, he said the max he can go is 6' X 2' X 2' for braceless. Beyond that is too risky. I have also seen a much larger tank, ard 15' X 3', with stainless steel support all round.

Aquatechnic makes a lot of braceless tanks, talk to them.

scrap that tank when I moved house, roughly 5 yrs of use. Currently I have a 50" X 25" X 25", no braces, 15mm, almost 3yrs now. This was made by Proglass - Tampines Industrial Pk. In terms of value for $$$, Proglass is much more cheaper than Aquatechnic.

Er btw, glass tanks can last easily 10-15yrs provided the tank is never left expose dry and under extreme heat for a long duration. This is because silicon can harden & crack up. If you are looking for large second-hand tanks, this is one question to ask: How long has the tank been empty?
