I've about 4-5males and 8-10females inside the 6ft and a single pair in my bedroom. I notice most of the males look the same as the pic you got there but there is a particular male which stands out magnificently. The body colouration is about the same but the dorsal is redish very redish from a distance you can easily spot the difference. It's a very nice tri. If there is chance i will take a pic and show you guys.

Currently got 1 tri with fry. 1 tri with eggs. 1mamore with fry and 1 mamore with eggs.[]
    Cheers!

mamoré are shouter then trifasciata, they lack the third band on the stomach area towards the anal area. mamoré have a caudal spot at the tail end.Their coloration defers too.
    Cheers!

the ID key for the mamore is the third band.Tri don`t have this.
both the Tri & mamore are considered to be easy to breed.

Fox, my fish is stll young.Tri have this funny look on the face that make them look kinda old.

Bene, waa so many female, should not be a problem to sell a few to
Simon.correct?Tri have many colour morph, have seen a few on the net. i`ll wait for yr pic.[] [] []

Am i right to say that tri are considered smaller in size compared to other apistos?

At what size should they (male) be able to start breeding?

actually, from what i see, Tri has such a cute face.. seriously, me shock u refer them as old... oso the 3rd band isnt present on the mamore but the tri

fox, A. trifasciata is perharps one of the smallest apisto... sex maturity? ask benny, I think he knows better

IMO, mamore is easier to breed then Tri

as for colour morph, I supposed tri from diff rivers varies.. but usually with the same base colour.. so far, seen tri with yellow and red dorsal fin.. as for markings.. I believe varies...

my tri now reside in my 6ft.. think they need more time to settle down.. and plus my agassizii r once again breeding.. so alot of activities in that tank.. as for my viejita.. everytime I only notice one fry.. so I believe only one left.. jus to lazy to remove that one, perharps I shld try rearing it separately

simon, i'm curious abt ur setup. do you mean that you have several breeding pairs in a single tank? Do you then take special care of the fries or do you just leave them alone with the parents in the tank? How is the survival rate like?

I would certainly prefer a set up like that rather then a tiny tank with a single pair. It add more fun to keeping apistos and viewing their interactions. The overall view will resemble more of their biotope. ...mmmh i better go and learn more abt plants.

I jus let nature take its course.. survive rate usually low, but becoz my setup is heavily planted, and the foreground is fully covered, the frys have alot of places to hide.. so its actually a good thing.. I like to have them all in bigger tanks but dun wanna do it becoz of maintenance.. even though my 6ft is like bi-annually maintained. each female will take ard a radius of 30cm or more.. so u can have a few females in one tank.. oso provided u have enuff hiding places for them... if u intend to do such a setup, suggest u get the biggest tank u can afford.. then u select the species u wanna add in, avoid adding 2 specie from the same family.. (hongsloi and macmasteri) or (agassizii) as for plants.. since its a biotope then u shld be looking at echinodorus plants.. they r of low maintenance... we can guide u along with the planted setup
