For Eheim Ehfisubstrate, you can try Petmart, for bio-sponge and ceramic ring, normal brand will do.

I dont understand the 6months thing.

this is the most stupid piece of advice i ever heard.

Nobody can predict how long filter media can "last". No such rubbish as this media should last how many months and that media how many months. it all depends on the setup.
i really wonder where he got this formula from. ANd how did he conclude what time you should clean the media.

this will be LFS advise of the week.

and if the 6month media needs only 1/2 the cleaning, where do the dirty stuff go? Unless it has so much surface area that the bacteria actually breaks down the debris. ANd i doubt so.

    2028,
the lowest basket fill with ceramic rings and the blue eheim foam...
the top 2 baskets fill with ehfisubstrate. it is abt the most powerful biological media in the market.
all these will set you back another 70 at least...

medias are important. you've decided to get a good filter. fill it with good media. Even lousy filters can be improved with putting better media. Your eheim even more.

the ehfisubstrate, get those 5litre boxes.
    petmart sells at 60$.

if you buy in 1litre boxes, shops may sell from 18-22$...you do the math

a 5 litre box can last you abt 2years at least...so not too bad at all. They benefits they provide are more than justifiable.

i also recommend you buy the blue-foam-and-fine-filter-pad combined box. It contains a blue foam and 2 fine filter pads. Box should be grey/silver i cannot remember. Even if pet mart doesnt have c328 will.

the ceramic rings are "Ehfimech". they are actually for mechanical purpose...although it may seem strange. traps bigger debris and also spread water flow.

thanks again Isz, just got back from there try the 1 litre type first for the ehfisustrate... got the blue-foam-and-fine-filter-pad combined box last week.

I did not buy the ceramic rings "Ehfimech" from pet mart , i think the boss recommend other brand "angel" Bio ring( using the same material as the ehfisustrate)- 10x more area compare to the ceramic ones so try lor....

Now all i need is just the tank and the lightings..... []

Does the ehfisubstrate and ehfimech needs to be replaced? I thought they can be used for years. The ones in my 2224 has been in use since 1998 and i never notice anything wrong.

actualy ehfisubstrate, looks like zeolite, i suspect it is zeolite, in anycase, it needs replacing since it works like zeolite.

    -

    for my 2026.

    2 baskets.

bottom basket: ceramic rings. + blue sponge
top basket: seachem's denitrate (I would have gone with matrix if I could find it)

I have never used or know anything about zeolite.
Ehfisubstrate works by providing a very large surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow. There is nothing biological or chemical about it, only mechanical. So why does it need replacing? Does the bacteria eats away all the micro curvatures on the ehfisubstrate and make it "flat land"?

It is time to change when the pores get clogged either by dead bacteria colonies or dirt.

zeolite works on the principle of adsorbtion,

I figure the best way to test whether ehfisubstrate is just zeolite is.

    a) run it through a bare tank with some ammonia,

b)once the tank has removed of ammonia by the ehfisubstrate, add salt, then test again for ammonia

    hi chris,
could you please eloborate the rational of your test (after first test, add salt, run filter and test again) and am i correct to say the material is good (good absorbtion) if the ammonia is not present in the second test?
    Thanks!

Wow Erwin, you sure dug out an old thread... it's dated 2002.

Anyway, I think zeolite will release what it absorbed if you add salt to the tank. Chris was trying to test whether Ehfisubstrate is just plain zeolite.

    Actually, Ehfisubstrate is sintered glass.

Topic was dated to 2002, but it's still as relevant today. Glad to see you are still an active member of the community!

By the way, what did you go with in the end?

Read this about zeolite... it covers what salt does to it. http://www.fishdoc.co.uk/water/zeolite.htm
