i just got back from C328
got these 2 Apisto Caca from there
i am not sure what sex they are.. i was trying to get females. so i bought 2 in the hope that atleast one would be a female.
i kept i mind about the dorsal fin first 3 spines and black ventral fins..
still the expert eye may be of help.

these 2 pics are of the same fish.

this is the other one , the image is not clear enough but the fins can be seen.

they look awefully close to females to me

Most likely to be Apistogramma eunotus. Aggressive fellas.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Perhaps the price was too attractive to pass up.

Well, it was not a matter of price. Also, in that tank, there were a few confirmed male specimen that were showing the yellow orange markings. Is that tank really a mix of Apisto? I asked the lady and she said they were all of the same species. It had some HUGE cories in it as well as some little fish tetra like.

Anyway, how do I tell if they are Apistogramma cacatuoides or not? It's easy when they are male.. but this i'm not sure. I will go down to Biotope to get a female as soon as i have more cash.

(While i was at C328, I saw that convict that got it's tail removed till very deep.. poor guy)

I agree with what Benny pointed out, likely a Apistogramma eunotus. I got one of these from the same tank a few weeks ago.

My experience there was also rather confusing, I guess I saw that same tank, so many swimming around, but not sure what kind of apisto, so I gave up. Won't get any from there, unless there's an old hand to advise me there.

Even the paired up ones were in this tiny glass container.

a very poor quality pic to illustrate e orange/red markings on a female caca.....
i think these color markings are invisible outside their breeding moods....cheers!

Not all the time. Depending on the variant. Only in the 'super red' and some 'double red' will you see these markings.

Mess I agree. As for the cories, they are about 6 times the price of the dwarf cichlids.
