    Hi all,

    My narrow leaf java is getting rather unsightly as the leaves seem to be spouting roots (black furry growth along the leaf-edges) and then plantlets from around the upper half of the leaves, near the tip.

    What is the cause of this (as oppose to propagating via the rhizome only) and can I stop it?

    It's natural, you can't stop it. I've read somewhere that someone said this can also happen to a dying leaf.

    Ah well. I thought there must be some trick to it (perhaps caused by nutrient deficiency in substrate?) that leads to this sort of growth as the narrow leaf java I see in shops and on the web do not have shoots and roots on the leaves.

    That's because the new shoots and roots were pluck before shooting, Valjean. And the shops also pluck out the new shoots for sale.
    Something about the water & the fishes that calms me down.

    Oh I see. Wah that's quite a lot of work.. especially plucking the roots coz they're growing quite fast on my leaves.

    Not BBA, new plantlets do grow out from them.

    those shoots are normall, think u should be happy to see them (it's a sign that ur java fern is reproducing );

    some info to share is, leave it there till they grow till quite a big size and not remove them when they very are small plantlets. cos i used to remove them and leave my small plantlets floating around, a lot of them did not grow well, and the small dead leaves will look like "litters" on ur foreground..quite unsightly..so just leave them them as it is..
    i'm ADDicted to this wonderful hobby

    well, some progbograte them by cutting the entire leave and tied it to rift wood and not for long there will be lotsa tiny plantlets surfacing out from the cut leaf
